No telnet servers are allowed with AT&T broadband connections. http://www.attbroadband.com/services/products/SecurityViolations.jhtml |

Actually, do ask here for help when commiting a crime - it's a lot easier to catch criminals when they leave breadcrumbs the size of planetoids. |

Heh.. this guy on arstechnica once let anyone on the forum get a shell account on his unix (or bsd) machine so he could get practice administrating it. |

Actually there are sites where you can subscribe for a shell-account yearly. |

Acutally, I'm reading a book on computer security, and it recomends that you get a Linux shell account to work with. I currently have a slightly knowledgable view on what one is, but computer security, hacking etc is a subject that interests me at the time, and i was wondering if (since the book said you should get one) if AT@T Broadband offered one, because I know that they used to |

You need to read more. ATTBI has never given out shell accounts. And in fact when they were part of the @home network port 23 was blocked. Shell accounts consist of giving you telnet access to a server and that begins to ceate some risk to the server. There is no reason you need this access and no reason for them to give it to you. What you need to do is set up a Linux box at home and access that. Or search for someone on google who may have a junk box they don't care about open somewhere on the internet. |

I think you might be wrong about @home. I'm pretty sure that they *used* to allow people to run shells for other people. You just had to call them to set it up. |

Well, I got my friend to lend me his old Linux Box, I never knew that just the security (not hacking) side of everything was so interesting! |

Not when I worked there (1999-2000) and not the cable systems that were supported in house. There may have been some cable systems that did this since not all were entirely run by @home. But we were supporting TCI at that point which is now ATT. |

in my experience, when a book or another such long-term resource infoms you about stuff like this, it's probably out of date... |
