Well about a month ago or was it sooner i let za know i had problems with one of my clients, who then got busted for pirate software....

well things get better, thez rang me up giving me crap that after i left that thez hadnt uninstalled mz software from their computers, although i warned them to do so and the managing director refused to...

so anyway they got busted for that too, lmao....

now some numpty (read wannabe webmaster) has been taken on and has ported the whole site over to an apache server from iis, now they called me back asking why the site wont work....

Ummm have za got it configured for ASP was my first question.....reply "whats that"

have you got a database connection setup for the password user database answer "erm how ya do that"

i guess you havent got one setup for the models database and photodatabase then answer "nope"

hehehe so then comes the best part...i get asked wanna come fix it for us...my answer nope *snigger*

after all they tried to get me busted for illegal software my pc was clean and i lost it for almost 2 weeks while they checked it

they refused to uninstall my software after i left...got busted for that....

question is what would you have said in my place

oh this is classic!

this one goes in the record books of "what does that do?"

LMAO

as for what I would have said .. "sorry .. I don't deal with morons" .. ok maybe I wouldn't of said that .. but I certainly wouldn't have said "yes"

tomeaglescz: Do I read that correctly? All that mountain of crap that fell on your doorstep was because you refused to fix their stupid mistakes? Or have I got the order of events wrong.

If that is right I'd tell them to go and rot in hell and/or kiss my ass (literally).

emps the mountain of crap started over me explaining to them that the system i orginally designed as per their exact specs was growing way too big..

ie
original specs access database (as they only had office)

website on their IIS server, use asp to feed from database so info always live

tried to get em to go sql server seeing they only wanted ms products...

anyway this access db grew to something like 2 gb...yup thats right...things got bad so i got called in again and said WTF 2GB...shit i am surprised it works at all..

so i told em the route they should go down..they wanted to keep it as it was. so i basically told them well sorry folks i wont support something that will be permanently breaking, ya can take my advice, if ya dont believe me ask around, but if you continue with this then i wont support it anymore.

so we parted company on that basis...then they got busted....then i got checked out because they told the anti piracy guys i worked their and so they paid me the above visit..

thats the order of things..so in a way their stupidity kicked it all off, then the above happened..

InI: Would it not be possible to dump the database as a text file and then use PHP to suck it up and grab out all the variables and stick them in a nice new shiny MySQL DB?

RammStein: InI is (as always ) right. As much fun as it would be to charge someone 6 figures to do the job I'd rather have a crack at automating it and save myself haing to do everything by hand (although for that money I suppose you'd get a couple of trained monkeys to do it [damn thats my downfall always with the trained monkeys ]).

Just doing it by hand might result in 10 corrupted records/10,000 anyway and you'd have to check things by hand just to be sure things hadn't screwed up.

[edit: and doing the job for half the price and in a fraction of the time gets you a reputation as a miracle worker and you get more work ]

InI nailed it. You could have named your price and made them pay dearly for your services. If you really didn't want to work with them again, then they would have declined your offer. If you really didn't want to work with them again and they accepted... well the $$$ would have eased your discomfort quite nicely I should think. Great story! Thanks for sharing that

tom, I can do such porting work...

No need to port from ASP to PHP even if moving to Apache...just get a hosting provider that supports ChilliSoft ASP.

etc...
