Can anyone recommend any free software for copying/burning CDs?

Well, IMHO the best cd burning software is Nero Burning Rom, but unfortunately it isn't free...

Now, as far as free cd burning software is concerned, I can safely say that there aren't any (for Windows OS). Windows XP comes with built-in cd burning and it can get the job done, so if you have Windows XP you already have all the necessary tools. If you don't have Windows XP, only thing left is to use Windows port of the famous UNIX burning software called "cdrecord". I haven't used it, so I can't say nothing else about it, only thing that I can say is that cdrecord is command-line based software so you'll have to type a lot of commands before you'll be able to burn anything.

Windows binaries of cdrecord can be downloaded from here: ftp://ftp.fokus.gmd.de/pub/unix/cdrecord/alpha/win32/
You'll probably also need "cygwin" library in order to run cdrecord: http://sources.redhat.com/cygwin/

Oh, and one more thing, some computer hardware come with CD burning software on their complementary CDs (for example, with Intel motherboards you get NTI CD-Maker software for free), so check all CDs that came with your computer.

Nero is IMO the best software, but it's about $50 to purchase. There's an evaluation version that I believe is fully functional. I've never used any free CDRW burning software, but I think the Nero is worth the small price.

Edit: Oops sorry, Max beat me to it.

Yep, I have been using my XP for burning CD's here lately. I haven't had any problems with it so far.

I used to use Easy CD Creator. However, Ver. 4 (which is what I had) doesn't work on XP. Version 5 is about $100.

I looked around on TuCows and didn't find anything though. I guess you've tried ZDnet?

Thanks guys. That was the idea I was getting from looking around at some download sites...

I do have XP now, only had it a few days, didn't realize it had it's own built in capabilitites - thanks Max.

The computer (and the drive) are second hand, so I don't have all the original cd's that came with it.

Well, that's enough to get started =)

cdrecord isn't that hard to use acctually. To use it you also need another program to make iso's, but if you allready have the iso it is only a couple of 'simple' commands to get it started Haven't tried it on a windows pc, but on Linux it works without problems.

For windows programs I have to agree with the rest here that Nero is the best there is especially considering that it is rather cheap. I haven't tired the winXP burning thingy, but lets hope with work without that many bluescreens

Before XP I just used the software that came with the HP burner I bought.

Now I use XP and it works great. I've burned tons of backup CDs with it with no problems at all.

If the built-in features of XP dont work you can give Fireburner a try. I have always been pretty fond of this software.

Veneficuz, although cdrecord's commands are not that complicated, using it with ATAPI (IDE) CD recorders can cause problems sometimes, which arise from ASPI (SCSI emulation) drivers that you use (on Windows)...

Moaiz, Fireburner isn't free...

You're probably right Max All I know is that I haven't had any problems with it while running Linux.
