I used to use Win2k. I liked it a lot. Then, Bill Gates releases WinXP and I eXPerienced it. I liked it more, because it was just like the previous one (Win2k) with a more appealing interface. Then I started using only WinXP (although I have my trustable Win2k in another partition). But I always hated WinXP because it was sort of slow when using Windows Explorer, when browsing files (and in other situations where the HD was heavily searched).
I finally found out why my WinXP was slow. Because I installed WinXP in an NTFS partition but I had, as soon as I installed it, configured its swap file to a FAT32 partition. Now that I have just bought another HD, I partitioned it into four partitions, two of which being NTFS, and I changed the WinXP's swap file into one of these NTFS partitions and, guess what, WinXP's working just like Win2k always did. I'm so happy for this finding. I had to share it with you

I noticed and had this annoying problem since I installed WinXP, one (or more) year ago. It was completely by chance that I fixed it. Now I'm so happy with my little babe... Happy in double to know at least one other guy found my tip useful.

To boost any windows it is more practical to set the swapping file in another partition that has at least 3 times the size of your physical memory.

afaik, WinXP must run faster on NTFS than on FAT32 ...

I still use win2k and confused whether i use XP pro when my scheduled HDD reformat/cleaning occur.

Turn off your Indexing services , it will fly!!!

also, if you have more than 512 megs of ram, I wouldn't use any stupid swaping files...why???you have enough memory to run a country!
well...you do need it to run PS but thats another story

Ducati, and what if I have exactly 512 MB of RAM, would you still recommend turning off the swap file? I have just bought 256 MB of RAM and now my system has 512 total. I'm not sure about how to make good use of these extra RAM since I notice that WinXP is not able to use it very often. My swap file is in another partition, actually in a different drive than WinXP's.

What if I use Photoshop and I run out of swap file?

About the indexing service, I'll turn it off. I just expect that my WinXP doesn't crash after turning it off because I have no idea what this service does (despite the description given in the Services dialog)

PS - I went to see my Indexing Service and it is already in Manual Startup Type and it was not Started, so I guess it is already turned off. I just disabled it. That's why my WinXP is already flying...

XP's searches are slower indeed, cuz of a new feature, it searches zip files.

If you don't want it to search zip files you can unregister the DLL, start menu/run type:
regsvr32 /u %windir%\system32\zipfldr.dll
and it hit enter, that should give you a message saying that it was a success and your searches will fly in comparison.

to turn the zip searching back on run this:
regsvr32 %windir%\system32\zipfldr.dll

That was a great piece of advice.
I've just unregistered that dll.
Thanks!
