Hi, Here is Hiroki again. Hope you don't mind listening to me.

We stick to "web safe" pallet when we create image for the web. Because there are still 8 bit computer in the world. It supports only 256 color. That is all right.

But I believe a lot of web sites includes photo or high quality images consisting of more than 216 colors.
I wonder what is happening on 8bit computer user's side. is that still readable?

Any help is highly appreciated as well.
Thanks.

Dude, when's the last time you've even seen a computer running in 8bit colour mode?

Seriously, I scorn anyone still running in 16bit colour *glaces towards webshaman*

I don't think we stick to the websafe colors because of the legacy... I think it has more to so with plausable cross-platform antialising and transparency..

(since different monitors and computers display colors a little didfferent.)

Hey! I got a new graphic card...my 8-bit color days are done...

*puff, puff* Ahhh...nothing like 8 bit color after the peacepipe! Wheee!

Peacepipe, anyone?

You mean there is something better than 16 bit color??

up until a few months ago I could only go 16 bit

But it's not *that* bad. The worst things under 16 bit color are gradients - they simply *won't* be smooth. Ever.

And some photos or hihgly detailed graphics with high compression make some damn funny lines from time to time....but it's simply not worth trying to work around that as a webdesigner...when you get it to look right at 16 bit, it won't look right at truecolor...so, don't worry about it.

What's so bad about 16-bit colour? My computer runs on that, and it works fine. Gradient is no problem, so what's the big issue?

stupid drivers that are not able to render 24 bit images 'correctly' on 16 bit displays... that's the reason for the gradients.

I *can* use 24-bit, but only if I want a res of 640x480 ... And well... heh... No.
800x600 (16 bit) is bad enough...
