The old-timers don't need this, of course, but some of our newer members might benefit from a little scan-through.

Hmm... an interesting take on the subject, I suppose, but I've always found some of the articles at A List Apart to be very helpful:

Writing for the Web (along with Part 2)
The Narrative Web
Reading Design (somewhat related to writing)
Write a Better Weblog
10 Tips on Writing the Living Web

Not nearly as sarcastic, but quite informative.

great work there suho - you've come back in style.

now, if someone actually finds this thread in a search for "tutorial effective writing web", it won't be a waste of time.

still, it was a slightly amuzing website.

and emprah - i'm amazed you can actually stoop that low for two whole posts - and quite capably too, it seems.

Hmm... I suppose you gentlemen are correct in your implied criticism: that those who would most benefit from the article are those who are least likely to read it, or realize that it refers to them; and for everyone else, the article is irrelevant and trite.

For those who already know how to write, and wish to write better, Suho has delivered the goods.

Nope, not web coding, web writing. There's a big difference between the two. Take a look at some of the links I gave above for an idea as to what it's all about.

Digital Web is a great resource for web writing, yep. Oddly enough I'll be linking one of my old columns, only because it's about the only one worth reading

Written Content To Keep the Content Contented

It's not a tutorial as much as a breakdown of Dos and Don'ts that people seem to miss. Call it web-writing for dummies

Or by one.

The GN has a section in the links for writing content for the web so people shouldn't be shy about throwing any useful links in there:

BTW, can someone please (seriously) explain the whole "-x0r" thing to me, please? In a sentence like "That totally rox0rz," would you actually pronounce it "rockers"?

Edit: Oops...I can't believe I used a capital O instead of a zero...

The important thing to remember about conjugating the -0r verbs is that the pronounciation is entirely up to the writer. In fact, even questioning the pronounciation deems you mentally unfit to use the -0r verbs as your higher brain functions may interfere with the torpid mental state needed to become a l33t hax0r.

Etymology (as near as I can remember the progression anyway):
back in the days of mainframe dialups and MUDs people of a more freethinking way would often shorten certain common words in a sort of dialectic manner. One of those short forms became "hax" when referring to that freedom of information idea ( ) and/or the people involved in it. The addition of 0r came around to better note the difference of the practice and the people (think teach versus teacher) the 0 was nothing more than a funky tagging that was reminiscent of writing in ascii symbols instead of just letterforms. Call it code, call it

If your serious about writing content you should have these on your desk:

The Chicago Manual of Style: The Essential Guide for Writers, Editors, and Publishers
The Associated Press Stylebook and Libel Manual

This is a good quick reference:
The Band-Aid Stylebook

Of course no one who has read my posts (full of tikiTypos) would accuse me of being serious about writing.

As long as we're bringing up the standards, I may as well attempt to redeem myself by presenting the online version of Strunk and White's Elements of Style. Anyone wishing to really start from the beginning should read this, then the works Tikigod posted, then move on to headier fare.

Yah, Strunk & White's just rocks IMHO. If you can find it in printed form it's really quite easy to deal with, a very short book. One of the things that always stuck with me was the advice to avoid using big words just to sound intelligent. Use the *proper* word, big or small, and you'll always be understood better. Alas, I find I break many of the rules when writing online; different medium, different style. (ie: that last sentence broke some rule, I'm sure. =)

Unfortunately, most of the content had to be removed when the author's book was published, but there's still some good stuff at The Slot.
