hmmm... i think you need advice more than anything:

  • start with a free bulletin board (yes, there are many out there, you can search our site or FAQ for discussions on this), set up as much as you can.
  • get a community built up. that means at least 20 or so people, and at least 4 or so who are very regular.
  • enlist the help of your fellow community members to further the design and construction of your site.
  • think twice before posting a request like this on an existing community. I mean, honestly, what possible reason would anyone have for helping you? You haven't offered money - which is ok - but you also haven't offered any details about your site (other than 'teen community'), any reason for anyone to get excited about your mission, and feel a desire to be involved. So, after thinking twice, you could either reword your request, or just forget it altogether.

oh, and by the way - good luck. It takes more than just a bit of freeloading to get a successful community up off the ground.

Yup, that's about it, really. But to just distill what reitsma said (if you don't mind )...

If you already have a community (ie, a group of people), why are you asking us to do the work for you? And if you don't have a community, don't you think you're putting the cart before the horse?

I am attempting to start a Teen Community which offers the following:

Streaming Radio
Free Journals
Teen Counseling (this would allow teens to seek advice via other teenagers on Depression, Suicide, Self-Harm, and many other subjects)
Digital Art (made by the members, art is a form of Self-Expression)
Written Poems, Letters, Suicide Letters, ect. (Self-Expression)
A Chat Room
Polls, Games, and Fun Stuff (entertainment)

...And more.. I need help getting a "cool" teen oriented design which appeals. I am absolutely no good with Adobe so...
If you are interested in more details, my AIM is: RSanchez15

I really really need some help!

Regards,
Dustin Sanchez

Also I have current 31 non-active members because I attempted to create the forums to gather people before designing the site. The people I do have however know nothing about programmer or digital art. I want to do a real "launch" of the site with a full design, ect. I aint tryin to free-load, am just curious to know if anyone would be interested in helping me do this? Im no genius programmer.

Um, OK, did you read what reitsma and I just posted? If you're looking to drum up people for your community, that's fine, and we may even have some people here who would be interested in that sort of community. But to start off by asking for programming and artistic help is definitely putting the cart before the horse.

Personally, I would have no interest in this sort of community (nothing personal, of course), so I don't have too much more to say at this point...

Well Im looking for some people who would be interested in helping develop the site and who would if they like remain on the staff. Im sorry to hear that btw, but its ok. You see, I too am learning but what I want to do is something that is beyound me... I barely know BASIC HTML let alone php and I know BASICS of Adobe, nothing good enough to do what I want to do... If you know of any possible people who may be interested in helping, can you refer me to them?

Well, if anyone around here is interested I'm sure they will show up...

I'd like to stress, though (since I'm not sure if you're getting this), that I think you are going about this the wrong way. You need to look for people who are genuinely interested in joining the community, and once they are in then you ask them to help you out. Asking people to help you out first and then hoping they'll stick around later is sure to draw a lukewarm response at best.

So you barely know HTML, Don't know much about Graphic design and you can't program.

Why are you doing this in the first place?

Drac sort of does have a point. I mean, clearly you have a sense of purpose, but there are many such sites already. It's not enough just to point out the burning need for a new one, since there isn't (is there?)

Actually, I don't think there is anything wrong with getting together with a bunch of talented, like-minded people and putting a site like this together. Yes, there may be many such sites out there, but who says one more is too many?

But, as I (and reitsma) pointed out already...

*takes deep breath, then begins to smash head into the wall*

You have to have a community first before you can think about building the site. In other words, Dustin (if you're still listening), work more on getting people interested in your idea than just going around asking for unconditional assistance.

OK, that's pretty much all I can say about this. Anything else would just be repeating what's already been said. Not like my past two posts did anything like that, of course...

But if anyone else wants to borrow my wall, please feel free.

You say build a community first but don't you think it'd be better if the full site was running with all the features and then I started building the site? It's a teenagers website.,.. How many teenagers actually know programming? Thanks btw I'll check that site out... Later...

*sigh*

OK... one more time into the breach, my friends. But this is the last time.

Dustin: Yes, it would be nice if you had a site up and running that people could just stumble upon, but you've already admitted that you don't have the necessary skills to put such a site together. So, you have two choices:

1) You can do what reitsma said and use a free bulletin board until you can build up a community of people who will then be willing to help you out.

2) You can do some "networking" and try to get together a group of like-minded people and then build the site together. This is significantly different from running into an existing community and screaming, "ELF NEEDS FOOD... BADLY!"

What? That's not what you said? Funny, that's what I think of whenever I see this topic title...

We have done so.

Hi Dustin:

I think you (or I) are confused on what Suho and retsima are saying. I think they are asking if you have asked your community that you already have, if they can chip in on the design.

There are a lot of resources out there that doesn't take that much "know how" to get the job done. You have what 30 people there now? None of them know anything about web? There are A LOT of teenagers out there that know programming.

Your best bet would be to try the link the Lacuna posted. I have gotten a few gigs there that never paid. No big deal, but I put a lot of work into them and the site never was put up. That was annoying! If you want, you can email me with some "SPECIFICS" of what you are looking for. After that I will let you know if I have the time to help out at all.

Since I am not a teenager, I doubt that I would be willing to be a regular member.

Later,

I wouldn't call you a freak since I started programming when I was 8 and started webdesign when Windows 3.11 came out.

Regardless, I think there have been a lot of good comments all around, and I would definitely second Sensei Suho's comments.

He... guys don't go bad on him.
He is asking our help with something he can't do alone. He wants to learn too.
[quote] ...but I was hoping you'd help me design the site....[/qoute]
He did not ask us to build his site. Only help building his own.
And is that not what we do: help people take care off their own business?

So first things first:
Welcome Dustin ~gives pills and straight jacket to dustin~
You might read this :FAQ:: Welcome at the asylum
and this :FAQ:: HTML
and these Guru's Coding Tut's
and finally this DmS tutorial about good design.

After all this reading you might a good night sleep....to wake up fresh in the morning.
Now you want to build a community? Then you need some sort off forum software and some webspace.
I think that's accounted for. If not search the net google or our faq's.
Now you need to know how what the teens like, look at other websites for teens look at popular sites, how do they look like, what are the conversations about, how can you improve these, what is missing?
This should give you a much info. Now make a plan about the looks and the links and the info.
After this try to make a site (you can use a program like dreamwaver or any wysywig program for this).
Then learn html better. Finally keep asking questions, and we might be able to help you to develop yourself and your site.

Also you might send me some mail if you want more help, i am trying to build a new portofolio to re-enter the website development market so in this light i might be able to helpyou out. However i will not join the community i think. Just help you out in the background.
O and the mail is in my profile... you can find on top off this message.
