Woo! What a weird, busy couple of weeks this has been, I guess you could call it my "christmas holiday", but really, it just went on and on, I'm exhausted. It all started back around Dec. 20th, when we spent 24 hours working our way from Stockholm to Florida to visit with my family. (Yes, the trip took 24 hours, door to door. Coach all the way, Ba-by!) We rented a car and hooked up with my Mom, who had a good place for us to stay in Delray Beach (nice little town, BTW.) One of the first things we had to handle was to see about changing our return ticket so we could fly back, not on the 29th as planned, but instead on Jan 7th. This gave us the opportunity to arrange *another* trip, this one a week long hop to San Diego to visit with Malin's sister.

Back to florida, we got to do some things, like a) fix my Mom's computer, b) my Mom's telephones, c) cook christmas dinner. (Chicken, marinated in chili sauce and then cooked in coconut milk, and also a "Jansson's Temptation", a potato gratan (sp?) with anchiovies, yummy!) My brother and his wife and 2 kids showed, and my sister and her husband also were staying at my Moms, having traveled from Hong Kong to be there. (I have an odd family.) I lost track of all the [stuff] we managed to get done there, but it was good, my Mom was moving to a new flat and needed the help, as she was also dealing with my Uncle, her brother, who is sick with cancer, bad juju. The day after christmas we also hooked up with my Dad and his wife in the West Palm Beach, that was nice, if stressful, (I don't particularly get along with my brother, sigh.) We also got to spend a couple of days with my client (and friend) Gerry in Ft. Lauderdale, that was very cool, he's got an awesome factory for making humungous aquariums and all sorts of neato-keen tech devices to make them go, that was fun!

So, 7-8 days, simulating a chicken minus one head, or perhaps a ping pong ball in a blender, then we were off to San Diego! What do you do in San Diego, you ask? You mean, besdies shopping at the UTC? (Is there anything to do besides shopping?) Well, we *had* to shop, as I had completely forgotten about New Years Eve and needed an outfit. (Actually, I would have been just as happy staying home and watching TV, but that was not meant to be.) We went to the hottest club [sic] in downtown, the "On Broadway", which alas, sucked. Malin and I bailed out at midnight and went to a Fridays for a late dinner, which was better.

Seems I spent the rest of that week drinking Starbucks and working on Malin's sisters garden, which was a sorry mess, it needed the help. We spent a few days driving around looking at neighborhoods and properties, as (drum roll please!) it looks like we'll probably be moving there sometime this coming year! Yes, it's time for the doctor to return to the states, which will be cool for all, except maybe for those of us who smoke (that'd be me, heh.) It'll be tough leaving all of our local clients behind and finding new, but this is something I can do I'm guessing. Anyone here live in San Diego? We'll hook up. =)

So! If anyone has been wondering things like "where the hell has doc been?", that's what's been up. 3 weeks or so with little or no internet connectivity, exhausting travel BS, family get-togethers and such, but now we're back, yay! Bummer that we both woke up at 2:00am, now it's 4:30, let's see if we can sleep again and get onto a schedule of sorts, heh.

Heh, I'm glad someone pointed out the p4k dealie-bob, I know I would have missed it! Here's my screencap for proof and suchlike...

I had to chuckle over the whole Starbucks thing, I was trying to describe to Malin my old "Corporate Coffee Sucks" T-shirt I had made back in my old screenprinting days, I used to be a big defender of the local independent coffee houses in Minneapolis, but what's a guy to do when he can't even find one to patronize? Gotta have my café mochas, don'tcha know!

Moving back is scary for me, my old-time "position" of Freelance Terrorist made me a bit nervous passing through customs, what with the USA doing it's best to become a police state and all, but I digress. I figure I'm going to have to spend the next 6 months at least just tying up loose ends, selling our flat and saving money - we may not have any clients at all when we get there, and San Diego is a pricey place to live. I figure we'll just rent at first, then see about buying a place once we have cars for cruising around, and then a few years further on we can see about maybe moving north, Seattle ways perhaps? Time will tell.

We have more than a few pics stored in the new Sony F707, but they're still sitting in there, we'll pull them all out soon and see what we ended up with, after the battery died we haven't been able to even look at 'em ourselves!

Glögg (as it's called here I believe) usualy just comes in a bottle, either the low-alcohol variety from the grocery store, or the other kind from the Systemet Bölaget. Most folks tend to spike it with either red wine or rum. Or vodka, whatever. =) Typical christmas fare, we brought a small bottle of "Glögg essence" to the states with us, heh.

Hmm, another DocOzone floating around? I have a collection saved of the "False Ozones", shame this one has no website or he'd have made the list. 'Nuff said about *that*, heh heh.

So! I'm going to do my best to read through all the mess that's been happening, sounds like a few odd episodes happened while I was missing? No big surprises *there*, this is an asylum after all! Can't get too shocked to find that crazy people hang here, hah!

If I may ask, what area of San Diego are you looking to move into? How do you like the home prices around here? Nice, huh? You don't use that arm much, do you? How about that leg? Pretty low mileage?

Seems we've been mostly looking north of the city proper, like Encinitas. Money may force us elsewhere, someone said something good about San Marcos, maybe? Encinitas does look nice, and it seems that every other house is for sale, which might lead to a collapse in the real estate market. (Good for us, bad for existing homeowners. Yay!) I'm guessing we'll be renters at the start though, which gives us time to look around.

Look at some of the suburban areas in San Diego County like Poway, Rancho Bernardo, Rancho Penasquitos, Carmel Mountain Ranch, Ramona, etc. I live in Poway. It's not exactly the cheapest place to live being that the most expensive homes are well over 1M USD and the cheapest homes (I think) are around 250K USD. It's a nice place but it's not exactly the most exciting place to be. Most people commute to San Diego to work in big business. Rancho Bernardo is a mile or two away. The houses are big, nice, and for the most part, a little cheaper than Poway. Carmel Mountain Ranch also has plenty of incredible homes but prices are static with the rest of San Diego County.

Poway is nice for a graphic designer because there's a local printshop that can be reached in 5-10 minutes from just about everywhere as well as a few other graphics places. There's the South Poway Business Park which is home to a lot of the big businesses (and small businesses) like Gateway and, I think, IBM's new office.

The street racing scene in San Diego is the biggest on the West Coast. There's a fairly good party scene but most parties aren't dance parties. Of course, once you get into the areas in San Diego or San Marcos there will be some nice entertainment. I go to college in San Marcos. It's only an 18 mile drive from Poway. There's San Diego State University's new campus across the "street" from Palomar College. The Art Center is located in Encinitas, I believe, which isn't THAT far from San Marcos/Poway.

In downtown San Diego, there's plenty of jobs to be found like at Bulldog Drummond (http://www.bulldogdrummond.com/) or at Four Square Productions (http://www.foursq.com/) as well as many other firms. San Diego is a freelancer's dream: plenty of businesses for the plucking.

Overall, anywhere in the San Diego area are good places to live. The only thing that may upset some people is the traffic, but the natives are used to it.
