Anyone catch this Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel) show when it was on FOX (for about ten minutes) in 2002? It was a mix of sci-fi and western that actually worked. The characters were interesting, the stories and settings were engrossing. It was a very good show. Unfortunately, FOX gave it a poor time slot, refused to show the pilot as the first episode (Joss had a weekend to work up a new script for the "first" episode) and quickly cancelled it, replacing it with the subsequently also-cancelled cop-'drama' "Fastlane".

Well, now FOX has released the entire series ((Edit) 14 episodes, (/Edit) including 3 episodes that never aired) on DVD, entirely in widescreen format and in the order they should have been played. I got my copy in mid-December and have watched most of the episodes at least twice, if not more. I highly recommend this DVD set to anyone who likes Buffy, Farscape or smart sci-fi in general.

Anyway, anyone catch it?

Evil in theory, not so much in practice...

I did hear about this at the time but I don't think it was shown here in the UK (well pos. on the Sci-fi channel which I don't get)?

It sounds like the DVD:

gets the thumbs up from Whedon:

and it sounds like he hasn't given up hope quite yet so........

[edit: Pity its only available in the US for now]

Thanks for the links, Emps.

BTW, the Firefly DVD set is the 12th best-selling DVD set at Amazon right now. It really is a great show.

Y'know how I knew Firefly would be a good show? At the end of the second episode (which was shown as the first episode), "The Train Job", the main bad guy's lieutenant and his thugs have been defeated. Outside Serenity (the heroes' ship), they offer to give back the money they were originally paid by the bad guy (before they really knew what the job entailed). The lieutenant swears to hunt them down, "and some day they will feel the pain of..." And then in one quick motion Mal (the hero captain) boots the lieutenant into the ship's engine intake. Whereupon he starts the speech over again, this time with the next thug in line, who readily agrees that giving the money back seems fair. Also, there's the fact that the heroes do get shot, stabbed and otherwise injured.

If and when anyone gets the set, watch them in order, but keep an eye out for "Shindig" and all of Disc 3 ("Out of Gas", "Ariel", "War Stories" and "Trash")

I watched about 4-5 episodes and while the melding of technology and old west themes did remind me a bit of trigun but I just never bought into it. From the DVD sales It clearly has a pretty loyal fan base. I wonder if it might pop up in syndication.

I like it, but don't assign it the divine status its most loyal fans do. Anyway, they're currently talking silver screen.

I wouldn't say it has divine status, but it was a very good show, and there aren't that many out there. It's a show worth supporting, unless you want more so-called "reality television". To paraphrase Marvin the Paranoid Android, "Reality is bad enough without inventing any more of it."

PT: Now thats interesting news - I wonder if he is hoping to the Star trek trick of using silver screen success to bounce the show back on to TV?

I di a quick search and came up with these reports (in chronological order - latest last):

Last word on the subject, but if you like Firefly, check out FireflyFans.net. It's a really nice site, and not only has some really great pics of Serenity, but also the inevitable news about attempts to revive the series (apparently there's a soundtrack cd in the works) as well as the script for an episode that was never shot.

Good stuff if you like Firefly...
