Good Lord - its red!!

I saw an interview with some guy at NASA and he mentioned putting men on Mars and the reporter seemed quite suprised and the NASA guy said we should wait for a speech from Dubya in the next few days so fingers crossed

oh dear!

men on mars..... don't about 80% of any missions to mars fail?

Heh - imagine being inside one of those airbag-filled capsules as it plummets to the surface of mars....

And i'm sure things get a lot harder when you need to plan a return trip as well.... not to mention the travelling time required....

If your interested in doing your own flight to Mars you should try this http://www.medphys.ucl.ac.uk/~martins/orbit/orbit.html
I'm having tremendous fun with it. Warning! Steep learning curve ahead..

Ahh - that explains it. Well timed to hit pre-campaign press... Don't you love an election year? So many bright promises... so much mud slinging... *sigh*

I do love JTHM... Squee is my hero!

I met the guy who writes that comic... I wouldn't want to be alone with him in a room for any period of time. As weird as JTHM is, I must admit that Squee is pretty cool character.

The Mars photos are simply wonderful.

I know it is most like election year posturing but whatever it takes for us to get a moon base established is ok with me. I would prefer we focus more on the moon and leave Mars to the robots until we're closer to getting a permanent presence set up there as well.

Sooo anywho... I'm listening to Coast to Coast with George Noory last night and who did he have on? Well, noneother than Richard C. Hoagland. He's the guy who was/is? convinced that the so called "face on Mars" was made by humans. I actually got his book years ago and it was quite the load. I mean he had somehow figured out that an entire civilization used to exist on Mars before a huge catastrophy destroyed it all, quite possibly a war. And to back that up, he actually said this last night, why do you think the planet was named after the god of war? Whoa! That clenched it for me

I suppose he is able to make a good living out of this sort of thing but it does tend to turn one's stomach. Check out some of the claims at Hoagland's site: http://www.enterprisemission.com/

reitsma: Hopefully Bush's successor will cancel the manned mission to Mars and the return to the Moon experiments. Manned missions waste billions of dollars and are merely political. Many of the scientists that I know agree with the viewpoint that manned missions are a waste of money and time. We would accomplish more if we just used machines until technology gets to the point where the risk of failure is nearly nil. We would accomplish even more if the monopoly on space exploration was crushed. Space exploration needs to be privatized.

Bugimus: The "face on the moon" is just a series of craters and mountains. Though this author's imagination is very wild.

For everyone else: In case you didn't know, the Spirit's mission is geographical. It's not a life-finding mission.

Hoagland was actually saying that he saw a bolt laying next to the Spirit in another picture. Desperate is almost an understatement. I am simply amazed. And not only that but there were a few callers that asked how they could contribute money to his efforts to expose this "cover up". He's got a PayPal link right on his page if anyone is so inclined.

metahuman, yeah I agree the face turned out to be not much of a face at all. To be honest, even the best photos of it never looked symetric enough to impress me in the first place. It always seemed a tremendous stretch... but some people really go for this type of stuff.
