Lets see, the title is pretty self-explanitory. I want to know what your favorite bands, and CD's by that bands are. I seem to be in a music (listening) rut right now, but I'll list some of my favorites to start this off:

311 - Soundsystem, Evolver
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Californication, BloodSugarSexMagik
The Cure - Disintegration, Bloodflowers
Sublime - Robbin' the Hood, Sublime (self titled, and much more "mass-marketed," but still great)
Queens of the Stone Age - Songs for the Deaf (A breath of fresh air)
Pink Floyd - Meddle
Nirvana - In Utero, Nevermind
Dave Matthews Band - Under the Table and Dreaming
Barenaked Ladies - Stunt
A Perfect Circle - Mer de Noms, Thirteenth Step
TOOL - Lateralus, Undertow (I really couldn't stand Aenima *dodges flying produce*)
Rob Dougan - Furious Angels
The Beatles - The White Album, Magical Mystery Tour
Dredg - Leitmotif
Eric Clapton - The Cream of Clapton
Depeche Mode - Music for the Masses

That's about all I can think of now, anyways: Lets hear yours.

My favorite Song on the new APC album is EASILY "The Noose." The lyrics on this cd are beyond compare to Mer De Noms: More thought provoking and more beautiful. I dont think its possible to quantify APC to Tool. They're 2 different bands, so saying that just because i'm a hardcore Tool fan that i shouldn't like the new APC is BS. Some of the songs on this cd give me goosebumps every time i listen to it. I guess thats just me.

Taproot - Gift, Welcome
Ill Nino - Revolution Revolucion
Soulfly - Self titled, Primitive, 3
Sepultura - Roots is my fav, but they're all good
Korn's early stuff
Limp Bizkit's early stuff
Nirvana - who doesn't like them?

I'm not sure now it got their, but looking through old music DVD's, I found a song called "Classical Gas" by Mason Williams. This song, is AWESOME. It's been on replay for several days straight. I've never heard any of his other stuff, though.

--

APC's Thirteenth Step has really grown on me since I first listened to it. It's diffrent from TOOL, and it's different from Mer de Noms is all. I went into it expecting another Mer de Noms, and I'm pretty fucking happy it wasn't, because it was better. "The Nurse who Loved Me" and "Weak and the Powerless" are arguabley (well, by me =)) some of Maynards best work so far.

W00T

Finally someone notices that... It's really a matter of Adam and Danny, and a little of Justin. Maynard just writes/sings the lyrics (for TOOL). Of course it's obvious that all of them are into that religious symbolism area. I don't think anyone is really clear on what TOOL's stance is religiously, I know they have a lot of anti-religious lyrics but on their inspiration site (dissectional.com) you see a lot of Jewish Mysticism symbols in there. You see the relevance to the Tree of Life, the Number System, the Star of David. And if you go to Danny's website you see a bunch of stuff related to peganism and hinduism (kind of a strange mix). In any case... TOOL is much more artistic than any other band out there, when it comes to all around art fashion.

I really like Mer De Noms... So I'd still consider myself an APC fan. I'm just going to pretend like I never heard TS and just move on with my life. I'm not going to hold it against Maynard or APC, I just didn't like it that much.

Did I say Led Zeppelin, I don't think I did. I bought How the West Was Won recently, and loved it.

Sanzen: I'm not a big fan of death metal but Nile really deliver the goods - the vocals, the drumming, the Egyptian influences, etc. are all spot on. Rameses Bringer of War has to be my favourite but Unas Slayer of the Gods, Black Seeds of Vengance and Howling of the Jinn are up their too

Its worth it just to answer the question "What the Hell are you listening to?" "Ahhhhhhh well that was ' Libation Unto the Shades Who Lurk in the Shadows of the Temple of Anhur'" (Masturbating the War God is another title bound to raise an eyebrow ).

Anyone looking for something to raise the hair on the back of their neck should track down 'Aldyn Dashka' by Yat-Kha (from the album of the same name).

Sorry I still can't be bothered listing my favourite bands

Yeah, Nile is sooooo mindblowing. I've recently started listening to a lot of heavier stuff.

Mastodon
The Haunted
Lamb of God
Nile
Morbid Angel
The Agony Scene

just to name a couple of the heavier bands i've been getting into.

Mastodon is probably topping my list though, if you think Nile has a good drummer... you are in for a surprise. You should listen to the song, "Where Strides the Behemoth" from Mastodon. Its mindblowing, simply put.

Sanzen: And why doesn't 'Unas Slayer of the Gods' (at what 11-12 minutes long) seem like a trial?

On your recommendation I looked at a few reviews of Mastodon and their drummer is highly praised.

Morbid Angel? Now that takes me back - are they still going or are you casting your net back to the first time round?

Check out Curse of the Golden Vampire's album 'Mass Destruction' (not the Animal Empire album 'Curse of the Golden Vampire' which is different, but good in its own way, and there is some cross-over in band members) - not very subtle but just this side of listenable for me (just).

Morbid Angel is still around and playing, but you kind of have to give credit to the forefathers of an aforementioned genre if you're going to respect the youngins.. you know?

I'm not sure what you're asking me about Unas, Slayer of the Gods. Thats a really long song, and sometimes ihave trouble listening all the way through it.

Isis is also another great band. More epic and complex (genre wise) than most heavy bands. Kinda like taking Godspeed You Black Emporer and mixing it with a death metal band.

Seriously though, pick up the Mastodon disc, you wont be disappointed.

Saw Mastodon opening for a Clutch show a while back.

The drummer was good, can't deny that, but that's about where it ended....
