hmmmm. what do you guys think? I think alot of people are disagreeing with this list from Rolling Stone


I am a big Allmans fan but Duanne at #2 over Clapton? Kurt Cobain at #12? I think hes more known for his voice/song writing than guitar skills. #17 jack white of white stripes? I wonder what their criteria was.

VH1 did a better job- I think they had

I totally disagree with that Rolling Stones list. I mean come one, Kurt Cobain ahead of Santana and Jeff Beck? Seems like a popularity contest to me. And even worse is Frank Zappa @ 45.

And where the hell is Malmstein? That guy rocks.

I haven't seen VH1's list, but it does seem better, although Jimmy Page should be down a few notches IMO.

In my opinion, a few glaring injustices:

Mark Knopfler (#27) is miles above many of the ones before him, as are

Les Paul (at #46, did a lot for electric guitar and gadgets and was as extremely good player himself)

Eddie Van Halen (at #70, extremely innovative and inluential whether it got old fast or not)

Criteria indeed? Apparently it was not not talent or influence, maybe it was a vote? I could see the results if there was voting involved, and that among different age groups.

Andreas Segovia: Andrés Segovia (1893-1987) is considered to be the father of the modern classical gutiar movement by most modern scholars. Many feel, that without his efforts, the classical guitar would still be considered a lowly bar instrument, played only by peasants.

Agree with Xpirex, there are some very glaring omissions. Steve Morse, Al Di Meola, Segovia should have been a certainty, Rory Gallagher. I can't imagine why Pat Metheny was left off. Jack White at 17? Kurt Cobain at 12? I dunno.. seems like a rock/pop popularity list to me, not the top guitar players.

yeah looks like a rock list. it's hard to judge things in such a broad topic as guitarist. Too many genres to go through.

not sure about Yeppes though Xpirex. That man had no tone. But yeah Segovia, Tarrega , Sor, Guiliani...those are some great "Classical" guitarists.
Had a lot to do with sculpting the guitar through the early part.

I think that's what they need to concentrate on. What they did for the genre they are playing in. Know what i mean?

Those will be listened to in another 500 years still.. they have a timeless class.. they are historical... whereas most of your rock and pop folks will get forgotten. I guess it's an American favourites.. pop/rock list were' looking at here... This list is narrower than an ants arse.. Contrary to what the 'Rolling Stone' folks would have you believe the guitar was not invented in the 60's and it's main development had nothing to do with your English speaking peoples. Although I am humbled before Jimmy Hendrix.

I mean Kurt Cobain? who the hell is he? .. maybe he should be in the top 100 list of drug addicts and failures. You may as well include those donkey brains from "Bill and Ted's Incredible stupid waste of Time" movie.

Kurt is good, but he shouldn't be that high on the list.

Well, the only thing I really feel like addressing is the one thing I would think would be extremely obvious -

Since this is Rolling Stone - the rock and roll magazine - we're talking about, it is fair to assume that their list is specific to rock/blues music as well.

I certainly won't disagree with the claims made about the poor quality of many of the guitarists on the list, or the superiority of a large number of classical guitarists, but I'm afraid that is totally irrelevent to the subject at hand.

Ok.. sorry for those that love Kurt.. but I'm sure you know what I mean...

Xpirex : yeah.....he had no tone. I mean his sound was kind of strident at times. Not to say that he doesn't hold a place in the "Classical Guitar Hall of Fame" or anything beause he does, then again I don't like the way Segovia played Bach either.

Funny you say that as although Segovia is very higly regarded I find him a bit dry and lacking in passion too for my tastes. John Williams and Julian Bream as well..way t0o stiff and arid for me. I like a bit of fire and chilli pepper in my soup...

This is just like 100 best websites or something like that, which can never be a true list.
If you take a look, you can pretty much see only American and British names on this list. Not that I have something against them, but that just cannot be true, can it? What about Spanish guitarists for example?
In former Yugoslavia (now he lives in Macedonia), there is a guy Vlatko Stefanovski, he was in a band "Leb i Sol" ("Bread & Salt"), who is for me one of the best. He has been praised by masters like John McLaughlin, Allan Holdsworth, Joe Satriani and Mark Knoffler.
I was on his concert, what for an event!

Well....again: this is Rolling Stone. An american based Rock mag.

It is going to feature artists who are well known in the american market in the rock/blues genre.

That is a given.

Now, within those limitations, there are plenty of wrongdoings with that list still.

But at least recognize that those are the limitations that this list is dealing with......

def a american popularity contest. for example, trey of phish (whether you like his music or not) is an outstanding guitarist playing with very good musicians- and you do not need to be on drugs to appreciate it. He is #73, while Warren Haynes who I do like (playing in 3 bands- Govt Mule, Allmans, and Phil & Friends)- who has made the radio in the last year- made #23. He did make guitar mag's slide guitarist of the year two years in a row (a few years ago) and is very good but #23 all time?

def a pop contest- but if so, how the hell did EVH drop to so far down the list? He hasnt been on teh charts in years . . .

It seems this list is catered towards the casual music listener rather than the music fanatic or musician.

cro8 - I think the bigger problem is the quality of popular rock these days.

How can a magazine that has been top-notch for decades keep up the quality of their reporting if the quality of the music has - by and large - declined so greatly?

Of course, as with anything, if you look hard enough, and dig deep enough, you can find good things today.

But not like it was 20-30 years ago.....

In the 70's, you could toss a stone in any direction and hit a "rock god".

Nowadays, you have to dig through piles and piles of bullshit to even find a competent rock guitarist in popular music.

Although I agree with you 100% Dl....

It just means we are getting old.

This list is truly a measure of mainstream popularity, not great guitarism. Kurt Cobain should not even be listed here, as his songs were mostly accidents that happened to sound cool and if you can be "cool" enough to fake a shit solo then it must be Rolling Stone magazine. Yes Joe Satriani is an instrumentalist, not a singer - where's he? Love Hendrix, but wouldn't list him at the top. White Stripes - pass me another break please. Tom Morello? - sure if you count multiple accompanying effects as being a "guitar."

Rolling Stone - another tabloid.

I'd rename this list to "Top 100 hook guitarists of all time"

Personnaly i think that the greatest gitar player of all time has to be jimmy hendrix.

I like williams but he puts out some shite sometimes. Bream....well....some of his recordings are really good but damn...his tone sucks sometimes. David Russell! Now there is a madman!!! You want to hear some serious classical guitar he's your man. Met him and saw him in concert. WOOO!!! What a show. He opend with Invocation and Dance by Rodrigo. If you know the piece, then you know this is one hefty piece of music.

my top guitarists are

1) Joe Satriani :
I love to play his shit.. its amasing.
His compositions feel like you are singing with the guitar.
but at the same time its complex and fast. He is my master..

2) Chuck Schuldiner (Death):
This guy in my opinion created Death Metal. If not so then he did set the
standard as to what death metal should be. His riffs where simple but
perfect ( specially for the drum gods that played with him ). His lirycs where perfect.
( WHERE COMPLEX TURNS TO SIMPLICITY.. ) R.I.P Chuck..
ps.. if you play drums and want to become a master.. learn 1 or 2 songs from death..

3) Malmstein:
Feel like breaking your figers with some neo-classical arpegios from hell?

4) John Petrucci: very good technical talent. solid player. good
style mix. Some very amazing solos.

5) Steve vai: Everyone thinks he is the greatest player but me..
I think he has some great skills but mixed with very bad composition
and very exagerated effects. His songs just sound like a big
showoff of techniche and lack "feeling". I can play his shit with
my eyes closed.. of course it wont sound the same because of all the
friking effects he uses.. and im not gonna spend 100 gran on effect modules..
end gripe... Ok.. overall he is a very good player.. I saw him play at the G3
consert.. of course Joe Satriani ROCKED THE BOAT.

6 ) Andres Segovia + John Williams:
( Masters of classical guitar.. There is nothing better than making
a guitar sound like you are playing 5 guitars at the same time hehe )
