Heh, I wonder how many posts one would rack up if he made a post for every IE/Windows security patch ever released...

Oh, yeah, go Firebird!

The answer is: once a month.

Yeah, but those are the "cumulative" security updates. They compile all the little fixes that have accumulated throughout that month into one big package.

As far as I have read, there is only cummulative patches now. So, only once a month.

Exactly...which is why microsoft always seems to be behind on patches to fix the latest exploitable security hole in Winblows. The attitude seems to be: "Yes, we know about that hole, and yes, we have a patch all ready to go for it...but we're not giving it to you for another 25 days"

They changed their attitude recently. It started being so since Dec/2003.
So, if a very dangerous security hole is found at the beginning of the month, IE users will be risking their assets for the whole month. Funny way to deal with your customers.

That's exactly what happened with the severe security hole in the support of the http://usernameassword@domain.com URL several weeks ago. It seems that MicroSoft found the parade to this hole.

The parade purely and simply "removes support for handling user names and passwords in HTTP and HTTP with Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) or HTTPS URLs in Microsoft Internet Explorer."

Congratulations MS! You've made another step to ruin the standards instead of fixing you buggy software.

All I know is I wish they'd get off their asses and update IE, they are really holding things up and making life difficult for a lot of designers. I guess they said not until the next OS, who knows how long that will be.

I realise that this may have seemed a lame post, but I have, along with many others, turned off "automatic update" and as this was designated "critical" update even if you use another browser. I thought I'd pass it along.
I have heard 2006 mentioned as the release date for "Longhorn" in this article in The Register

[edit]Updating[/edit]
Or the release date could be in 2005 according to ZDNet.

With all those security updates for IE get just one.
Once for all.

Its called opera (www.opera.com).

Unless of course you prefer to run the code natively in your OS
