I think it simple matter but what would the best way to implment the folloing concept.

I have web server, I also have web space at my ISP.

What I want to do is have my main and basic pages at the ISP and my experimental and files on my personal sever.

My problem is My personal server may or may not be active. I want the link on my page to only work if you can see the server.

I wish to have a lighted button or some such thing that would indicate that the server is active and now avaiable.
and not allow the link or redirect when the server is disabled.

I guess I could just put an server_on.gif on my site and display it on the main page at the ISP. But this would be no help unless one forced a reload on page load. There must be a better way.

I most likely can manage the javascripting I just need some basic directions.

Thanks,
jstuartj

Hey, I can help you out with this, it's simpler than it looks. Instead of doing it with a script, you can use an online service that I'm liking recently, called "dns2go". Head over to http://www.dns2go.com/ and sign up for the service, you'll get a domain name like http://yourname.dns2go.com/ - Once your account is active, you can download a small application that lives on your home machine, and what it does is if your machine is online, it sends a message to their DNS server and now that name points to your IP at home. If it's *not* active, it points to someplace else, you choose. Make that someplace else your ISP website, and using the same path as at home, create your online/offline links. if you *are* online, it will use the image from your home, if not, it'll use the one on the server. This is a free service as long as you don't get any extras, like I typically do, heh.

Oh my god, Winternet still exists? I thought they'd have gone out of business years ago. Glad to see they changed their logo, I was getting tired of owning the copyright to that thing, it was embarrassing! Hmm, I also used to do pre-press, working in St. Louis Park! The company moved to Chaska, though, and I no longer got to go there much. Just rambling, heh.

Thanks for the tip, I will look into it. I was thinking of getting my own domain name soon anyway.

Yes winternet dose still exist. They did get bought by Starnet communications however. I started with them in my old amiga day's when they were one of the few local ISP in MN.

Thanks again.
