im a beginner at html (and spelling it seems). I need to get a simple interface coded in with a button called say... links, could someone tell me if i would need any "java" or will html tags cover it for me. any maybe if someone was feelling really nice, give me a simple example of a code for a simple interface. Im using photoshop to make the interface. should i save the interface as a jpeg? with a big of compression, or will gif be just fine? i guess thats a photoshop question, but maybe someone can answer it here to save me a topic. hope i didnt leave anything out....

I'm not exactly sure if this is what you mean.

You have made a button that says links on it. You would like it when you click the button it takes you to the links page? If this is what you mean then no you will not need any java, just some basic HTML.

<A HREF="links.htm"><IMG SRC="/images/links.jpg"></A>

That is the basic code for a link button.

Now about the interface. You should compress it enough so that it is a small file size, but still looks good. Also dont forget to slice up the image and save each part as a seperate file so that it will be easier to make buttons from.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

Okay! thats a start. That link code is cool, just make an image a link, im sure i read that several times, but it didnt quite click i guess. But, I'm still looking for the proper tagging for an interface. Or a good tutorial, I have several, but nothing that really walks me threw an interface. I'm guessing java script will be necessary. Thanks for the nice reply Lao.

Javascript is not necessary for a basic interface.
If you want to see the code for a basic interface, find a site that you like, view the source code, and take it from there. Replace their elements, styles, colors, and text with yours.

That's the easiest way I can think of to get into it.

You can do a really great site without JS but it is nice.

If you are just getting started take a look at Doc's mouseover script It will help you get your feet wet.

Nice answers! accually Jeni, I've been browsing the net a lot looking for websights to get ideas. The hardest part is finding a simple one! I finally figuired out what mouse overs are, and I'm able to reconize what code does what, and I'm getting the tags down slowly. Any tutorials on Image ready?

thanks JKMabry! I've been following your 'slicing' tut. Slowly getting there <bg>

JKM... I just thought of another use for your slicing tutorial. My wife has been doing stained glass for 25+ years and sometimes when she sketchs an idea.. I scan it... then run various colors in PS so she can get an idea of what it will look like... so I'm thinking I could scale up her sketch to whatever size she wants... then 'slice' the image/pattern - print it and then it's just a case of taping it together. I like it!

We now return you to your regularly scheduled topic
