I am needing some help. I am wanting to take an image and cut out the background and use the cut image on my homepage. How the heck do I do this? I cant find a way to make it look like I am not cutting and pasting it...

Okay, a couple questions first so I can get the easiest way for you.

What version of Photoshop are you using?

Is the image yours to use? (kinda touchy about folks pulling extractions from other people's images to remove copyrights, etc.)

Let me know, and I can suggest a relatively painless method hopefully <img border=0 align=absmiddle src="http://www.ozones.com/forum/smile.gif">

Well, I'd use Extensis Mask Pro, but that's a third-party filter. That's a bad word around here <img border=0 align=absmiddle src="http://www.ozones.com/forum/wink.gif">

if you feel like spending the cash, MaskPro does what it's supposed to do... But Photoshop 5.5 has an extract command that is very powerful if used properly.

And "third-party filters" are what are frowned on, things with visual fx that are tacky. <img border=0 align=absmiddle src="http://www.ozones.com/forum/smile.gif">

So Mask Pro is not a third-party filter?

Maybe that's the problem I was having in the "Eye Candy Bad" thread. My point was that some filters offer good control and provide functions that Photoshop doesn't. Mask Pro would be a good example, especially if you're talking about PS5.0 or lower.
I was told flat-out that all third-party filters are a bad idea, and I should just use Photoshop itself.
If people were equating "third-party filter" with "cheesy Eye Candy style effects" I could understand the argument. I was under the impression that the industry considered all plug-ins that affect an image to be "third-party filters", though. Maybe I'm just not up with the PS junkie 'slang'?

Das:

What was actually said was that third party filters were far from necessary...but some deserved a great amount of respect. Your take is understandable though, as a LOT of professionals detest the spoonfed lack of control factor of MOST third party filters.
(read: Not ALL, MOST. As, stated before, some deserve a lot of respect and work incredibly well)

It's true you can extract foreground without Extensis Mask Pro, or the extract feature in PS 5.5...but I've used both with great results.

Hence why I asked about his version of PS, to gleen whether we could walk him through the Extract feature, tell him how to do it other ways, or recommend purchasing Extensis.

See...everyone happy <img border=0 align=absmiddle src="http://www.ozones.com/forum/biggrin.gif"> , and hopefully the last time there's decrying or misunderstandings over the stigma of third party filters.

Stigma stigma stigma - I just LOVE the sound of that word!!!!

Can you tell from my breath I've been secretly KPT-ing again?

I've taken to wearing dark glasses so you can't tell I MaskPro-ed this morning.

Thank God I never Eye Candied - I'd hate to have to wear that scarlet E.

Oh c*****n - is there stigma attached to using filters that USED to be third party before Adobe bought 'em?? Sob - am I soiled by my "artistic" filter menu items? Good by plaster. So long Conté Crayon. Asta la vista Plastic Wrap. Ciao Photocopy. We can't be seen together any more. The risk of - stigma - is to great.

Damn, I'm a wreck now!

Pree cisely. I couldn't give a rat's @ss who uses third party filters...that's up to them.

When things like Fire, etc. are so very focal as being the Major effect on a graphic, I personally find it ugly...but then I'm not big on songs I hear on the radio 24/7 either. <img border=0 align=absmiddle src="http://www.ozones.com/forum/wink.gif">

Hence the "stigma" commentary.

I notice there was a schwack of people who are quite touchy over this, on both sides of the fence though.

So odd.

Schwack schwack schwack - oh Peter, yer vocabulary is like freekin' POETRY tonight! But I guess it's already tomorrow and not tonight for you, isn't it?

BTW - what part of a rat is an atss?

An observation about 3rd party special effects filters (as opposed to "production" filters like knock-out or mask pro) - the "one trick" filters are the easiest to use and the easiest to spot and the quickest to become cliched. I think that's the crux of the, er (~speaks under his breath ~) stigma. Filters like KPT texture or gradient explorers can be equally simplistic on a single application, but in the hands of an artist are capable of mind boggling complexity when used in multiple iterations and blend modes. 'Course my mind is easily boggled

Da rat's atss? Ya'd haf ta ax a New Yorkah.

<img border=0 align=absmiddle src="http://www.ozones.com/forum/smile.gif">

Schwack of course trickled down through the ages from my sainted grandmother. To whom it's colloquial usage would have to be attributed, that fine specimen of blunt verbiage.

And that ain't no freakin' lie. <img border=0 align=absmiddle src="http://www.ozones.com/forum/wink.gif">

So what was I saying about touchy people and the stigmatic filtration community? I think the ...shhhh....stigma...exists due to superiority complexes spawning completely close minded purists, and yet a backlash of defensive proponents for quicker fixes.

It's a neat fence, but hardly one I'm playing volleyball over. Too many hoes to watch in the garden. <img border=0 align=absmiddle src="http://www.ozones.com/forum/biggrin.gif">
