Has anybody ever used the displace filter? i think that can be used to make a basic simple wire frame... atleast it is the only thing that looks like it could. and no, i am not trying to make a sphere! Anybody?

eyezaer:
You can use a displacement filter to do simple wireframes, yep.

You need duplicate that shape you want to wireframe and put it in a second document. Take the shape, then select it, and do gaussian blurs (imagine you're making a channel for Doc's lighting effects tutorials). Save that blurred black and white image as whatever you want.

Go back to the original shape document. Make whatever pattern that you want your wireframe to have, and paste it on a new layer. Select the Displacement filter...now search for the blurred version you saved, and set it as your displacement map.

Cut away any excess space on the wireframe layer..and voila..done deal.

Too fast?

Hope it helps, I can explain in more detail if needed.

Peter

Displace - a very powerful, useful, nonintuitive filter. You children don't have the benefit of Kai Krause's benchmark tutorials. Some of 'em are obsolete due to advancements in Photoshop (he wrote them back in the version 2 - 2.5 days), but happily the displace filter hasn't changed functionality.

Read about it at
HTTP://www.pixelfoundry.com/Tips/KPT7/KPT7.html

Here's the basic concept. You have one file (the one you want to distort: your project - I'll call it Master file.) You have another file, grayscale, saved in Photoshop format. I'll call it D-Map. Ideally the two files match size, but not necessary. Displace looks at the brightness values in the D-Map file and pushes the pixels in an x and y coordinate in the Master file. Light areas in the D-Map file push pixels in Master up and to the left. Dark values in the D-map file push pixels in the Master file down and to the right. So if your master fie is, let's say, a flag (just a flat rectangle with stripes) and your D-Map file is made with the clouds filter (again jsut a quick example), applying the Displace filter could put ripples into the flag.

This is a very simplistic example. Kai goes much deeper. Read it. A 2 channel file can separate up and down from left and right. Put avertical linear gradient in one channel and a horizontal linear gradient in the other and strange things happen. Put a radial gradient and see what happens. Coolness for sure.

But ... if you want detailed wire frame effects, don't go looking for them in PS. If you made a file to look like graph paper and displaced it, you'd get a cool image, the graphi would certianly distort, but nothing like what DG has been presenting - nothing realistic like that.

Uhm...eyezaer? could you ease up a little on the bigass sigs...and maybe avoid the flaming stuff...it kinda hurts my eyes and contrasts an awful lot with the dark oranges of the forum...in my opinion.

Too much white light hurts my eyes...I really like the dark orangish color of the forum and I think my darkish red stuff on the current sig really fits in well...And I'm gonna leave that as my sig and work on improving my graphics work now...

DG, I really dig it.
I've been fooling with the Displace filter myself for awile now, and have achieved some pretty rad stuff. One question: How did you get the "behind" part of the wire frame?
I've played with all sorts of variations trying to do exactly what you did and it never looks right. Hope you don't mind sharing.
