Hi, I was wondering if someone could verify for me a bug in the Color Dodge layer mode in Photoshop 6? And if it does exist, is there a fix out for it yet and where?

Cheers

Yup... that is a known 'bug' or issue in PS6... I havent got 6 so I havent got any first hand experience with it but there were a few posts here a while ago about it. I have found one of them in the archives and I think there is another one (only had time to find one).... also in that post there is a link to an explanation of a possible fix. Again I havent verified the fix. Below are the two URLs and I would also check out the adobe website/forums for further information. Hope that helps

From the Adobe Photoshop Forum at http://www.adobe.com

Photoshop 6 and the change in Color Dodge blending mode.

Photoshop 6 introduced a few changes in blending modes. Here´s a tip on how to save those older PSD´s, and continue with the Color Dodge behaviour you are used to:

Courtesy of Mark Hamburg, verified and posted by Chad Baker:

To create a new Color Dodge layer that will work like the old ones used to, simply Option (Alt) click the New Layer icon and select Color Dodge as your mode, then check the box to fill your new layer with a neutral color (black for Color Dodge and Difference, white for Color Burn).

To fix an existing Color Dodge layer (from one of your 5.5 files for example) that has 100% layer opacity, simply bring up the fill dialog with that layer selected, then fill the layer in 'Behind' mode with black.

To fix an existing Color Dodge layer that has an opacity of other than 100% it's a little trickier, but not much. The process is the same as above, but you must perform a quick trick first. Select the layer, then go to Layer>Layer Style>Blending Options. What you need to do is change the Advanced blending opacity to whatever your General blending opacity is, then move the general opacity up to 100%. Now all you have to do is what you did before, fill the layer in 'Behind' mode with black.

This is sort of besides the point, but I really don't think this is a "bug". Actually, I think the v.5.x was the buggy one. Speaking as a photographer, 5.x's idea of a color "dodge" was pretty heavy handed. The new version is closer to what I'd expect from a )darkroom-based) dodge. Trouble is, everyone sorta got used to the effect of the old one, so the "improvement" didn't go over so hot

Hm yeah... like some of the tuts I've seen (Darkgarden's "Drip") work quicker if the color dodge (and burn) layers have transparency for selection purposes... I had to find a workaround, and its kindof a pain... But I'll stop whining now.
