Well, you need three things.

#1. Intense pressure.

#2. Intense heat.

#3. Carbon.

Now, just combine all three, mix well, and wait several thousand years.

Actually, you need some graphite, 3000 degrees Celcius to melt the graphite, and finally 150,000 atm of pressure to form the diamond.

Right.....Anyway, for glass, tutorials have already been listed. For diamonds, on the other hand, I don't think there are any tutorials out there. Our friend tycho was working on a gem stone for days and I'm sure he had a couple hundred layers when we has finished. Glass can be made with the displace or glass filter under the distort menu, but I don't think you'll be making diamonds any time soon.

Here's a link for a guy who designs jewelry in 3D.
I know it's not PS and there aren't any tutorials but these
images might give you some ideas...just a thought. http://3djeweler.com/stilldex.htm

I rummaged this out of the archive:
http://www.OzoneAsylum.com/Archives/Archive-000004/HTML/20001015-3-000269.html

Tycho had a pretty amazing gem. He's pulled most of the graphics from his server, so the thread has lots of wholes in it, but one remains, pretty close to the end. It seem to involve tons of hand work, and a very clear idea of what he wanted to get to - no quick solutions here. Maybe email tycho and see if he can remember how he did it? It was spectacular.

Well, I'm glad people had real tutorials to point to, becuase the only thing that flashed through my head was Superman squeezing a lump of coal in order to create a faceted diamond for Lois Lane. "Several thousand years", fooey! Where's Superman when you need him?

Ahh, the good ol Gem

I'm quite fond of it actually... I have the .PSD sitting right in front of me. One of these days, I'll actually finish the dang thing. This was it in it's final iteration.. I still have some things I want to add to it, and maybe even make a little housing for it.

Tycho! I've missed you! You must be posting in areas I don't read regularly. Ah, that's a gem for you.

Hey - I re-read my post above and got a chuckle out of a type - "lots of wholes"; must have been feeling mighty inclusive that day.

I've worked out a version of a diamond using a combination of Doc's glass and texture wrapping tutorials. The result can be seen here: http://www.wizardofdraws.com/pages/diamond.html
Sorry I haven't made a tutorial of the method I used, but I'm sure a few of the gurus here can easily figure it out. I'll work on making the method into a tutorial if I can remember all of my steps. :/
