What have you tried so far?

I don't have PS with me at this computer, but my first thoughts were to try Clouds, Displacement Maps, maybe a lighting effect... I think that'd go a ways for a start. Hmm... I'll have to try those when I'm home...

Generally, beat the edges up, airbrush some stuff in. Maybe even start a new doc, difference clouds, and use that for a slight Displace and Lighting Effects (c&p into the working doc).

'Course, my level of assumption is probably way off.

Check that out. He does make use of Eye Candy. I know he uses EC some of his tuts, but I didn't know on that one in particular.

Details... details... details...

Maybe I should actually bother installing EC and doing some cool stuff. Do up several pics and then have a quiz to Spot the Eye Candy. Hmmm....

Here's what I did:

Make a new channel, and render some clouds, black and white. Gaussian blur by a few pixels...I went with 8. Save this channel as a displacement map for later on.

Make a new layer, fill it with a light tan of your choice, and run lighting effects on it. I used a directional light with negative material settings (matte) and high ambience. Try to get the lighting pretty equal all around. Keep the entire layer for now.

Create a new layer, make a large rectangular selection, fill it with black, take the lassoo selection tool, and make a jagged edge around it. Select it and run clouds with two light tan colors.

Now take an airbrush with a darker tan and shade some around the edges.

Run the displace filter on this layer at about 20% with the map created earlier. Set the blending mode to soft light.

Now load this layer's selection and trim the other layer to the correct size.

Hope it helps.

looks pretty good mbridge.. but the edges look a little too consistant , maybe one or two larger 'rips' plus a little more 'burnng' so wheres the treasure buried ?.. ~Vp~

mbridge has got it pretty much, but the edges do need a little work. Usually, you'd make a few tears yourself using the lasso tool. Make a few holes as well.
