I've had this photo for a while, so some of you have probably seen it, but I can't for the life of me touch it up to fix the red eye without simply drawing new eyes... any suggestions, or am I doomed to just attempting to draw realistic eyes in place of them?

Bad Red Eye

With your skill level man, I don't think the "drawing new eyes" is a bad option at all. I'm sure they'd turn out awesome. The red eye in the pic is so bad that eye structure isn't even visible(pupil and iris placement, etc.). I'd say drawing is pretty much the ONLy option but, I'm no expert.

1. isolated the red eyes using a quick mask (feathered 0.2)
2. channels palettle, picked the red channel and used the curves command to neutralize the red (back to the layers and make active)
3. on the eye on the left as you look at it, I used the sponge tool set to desaturate to remove an excess of green left by me neutralizing the red channel.
4. used the right eye to clone a tad of colour.

hope that helps ~Vp~

edit: btw.. wasnt sure what the original eye color is without a point of reference

Once again, I am humbled. I don't suppose you'd like to encapsulate that into a tut, vp? I'm sure I'd love to see it on GN.

Nice job!

Yikes, I look wired... I was probably better off with the red eye...

Oh, and for reference, my eyes are green, not that it matters with an image so small...

Heh. Not bad dude. But if this landed in my studio, I'd have to take out the shadow too. Maybe add two or three people who weren't there when it was shot. Smooth the hair. Add a necktie ... you know....

I'll tell you what I do lots of times. Doesn't always work, and might not on this bad a case, but at least it's the first thing I try (I'm an optimist!):
- loose feathered selection around the eyes
- Image>Adjust>Replace Color.

Really desperate measures: find eyes in another shot and swap. Really. Never had anyone complain either! (Don't try this on a real close-up tho.)

HS - I know you've got a cool new job an' all, but have you considered trying out for a gig as a demon on Buffy the Vampire Slayer?

Yeah, I tried the replaced color, but it still gives the glow effect... and I was looking for other photos yesterday where the eyes matched, but I don't have any... I just did this though after seeing vogon's work...

I didn't touch the channels though... I added a layer set to "color" mode, adjusted the color to my liking, then burned away the brightness and dodged away the dark outline... basically redrew the pupils and shine... I tried using channels after Vogon suggested but I couldn't get it right.

Well, here's a quick little example of taking parts from one image and adding them to another. Maybe I should have just stuck to the eyes?
