well in trying to recreate this effect: http://www.netmosis.com/temp/windy.jpg
i've failed horribly. i'm just not sure what else i could be doing other than either using an airbrush at various modes with a really dark blue (or stroking a path with such). of course the original artist could have been really handy with a tablet and just freehanded or traced over their original scan sorta letting off on the pressure at the end of each stroke. any ideas. or am i just drawing blank and/or havn't tried hard enough. seems like a simple enough effect to recreate, just i tried a few times and it never comes out quite right.

Ahhh! I was gonna post that! Yeah, a nice soft Smudge for the ends. In my copy of PS, it's bundled with Blur and Sharpen.

As for the lines themselves, I would say it's either a scan with some cleaning up, or good old fashioned hand work in PS. Or some combination of the two. Or...

edit. Bah! I hate it when I get a phone call when I'm making a post. No cookie for me. ~sniff~

I have a feeling they were using a tablet. I gave the look a try-The smudge tool helps. Try playing with liquify too if you have version 6.0

once i have decided you worthy of the cookies you may recieve some until then here's the recipe, i think:

6 tbs sugar
6 tbs brown sugar
1 egg
1.5 tps vanilla
.5 tps baking soda
.25 tps salt
1cp + 2tbs flour
6 oz chocolate chips
.5 stick of butter

mix sugars,vanilla, salt, butter
mix egg
mix flour, baking soda
mix chocolate chips

bake 10 mins at 375 F.

have at it, usually a little less .5 stick butter is better, pinch more brown sugar, and maybe 5 oz chocolate chips...it's all a matter of preference...and a god like touch...

I learned a neat cookie baking tip yesterday. Simply toss the dough into the fridge for awhile. Usually overnight if you can stand it. The butter gets thick and stays that way for the most part while baking. Thin cookies be gone! Time for something thicker.

Of course, toss a piece of bread into the cookie container to keep them moist.

Share and enjoy.

well, 1st things 1st - are we sure this image was created digitially?

if so, two options seem the most pliable -

steady work with a tablet...

well constructed paths. don't necessarily have to have been stroked....could have been *filled* ........?

warjournal: my recipe uses very little butter per volume so the cookies stay amazingly thick, sometimes half as high as wide. good stuff.

DL: just assuming it was digital, yeah so i'm just going to try high res steady tablet work. all else fails i could try the path filling, probably do it in illustrator first though...

here's a nice trick I've used before:

draw the shape(s) with a brush - a slightly soft medium sized brush.

select the transparency of the layer

convert the selection to a path

edit the path as needed

convert the path back to a selection

save the selection as a channel

go to the channel and refine it

good idea, though i figure if i do at high enough res, shrunk down the need for that much refining wouldn't be necessary...

let me know if you try that method though - it's worked quite well for some things for me.

either way I'd like to see the results of your effort

This would be tricky, but what about using the fade parameter for the airbrush or paintbrush. It would be tricky because you would only use in on the end, but it might work. dunno.

To me I think this was done with a real pen and then scanned. Im not sure; other than what has been suggested; how to duplicate it.

Another thing. I just LOVE this image. I did this with it.
Windy
I hope no one minds. If there are more pics where this came from please tell me where to find them. By the way....Who is the original artist?

Edit: Wrong URL

Edit2: (takes pill) OK I think I got the right url now.

carltoncig: love it. i guess i could always do it in real pen and do touch ups in photoshop. i could also get into real airbrushing which is something ive always wanted to try.

Yeah. I think the best way to do this particular effect is to do all the hand drawing on paper and then scan it in.

<off topic>Ive never done real airbrushing. When I was in New Orleans last year for a Sci-Fi Convention I got a hand airbrushed T-shirt. It had Queen Amidala from Star Wars drawn in Anime style. I loved it.</off topic>

comments? i used paths to trace out my original, smudged it, blurred it, and overlayed a lighter brighter blue filled layer in color mode.

AAARGHHH!!!

My sketch books and all of my original art is... gone...

...fucking gone...

I went looking for my art archives for something to scan in, clean up, and show. Big fat nothing.

sketches, inks, washes, coloured pencil washes, chaulk pastels, charcoal, ink and charcoal

Alpha anna Omega I guess. Time to start over. Can I get a moment of silence, please?

I'm feeling much better now. Well, not just because of JKMabry. I got out my red sable #4 and my water pencils. Then I did a coloured wash of a slug. Brown, black, and drippy. Then I threw it away. Seemed fitting some how.

I've still got all my John Byrne, so I'm happy about that. And, even though I don't have the originals any more, I still have my cat and my pumpkin.

Let the good times roll.

oooo, hey, i drew that pic! but ya...u want to know how i did it?
okie..well first (with my drawing tablet) i drew the picture in Adobe photoshop, usually i scan first, but this jus turned out to be a doodle that i liked, I used the airbrush tool for the entire picture using the color black, and i just cleaned up any messiness again with the airbrush but with the color white (hehe...obviously!) so then i felt like sprucing it up, so i went to "image""adjust""color balance" and played around until i got that bluish color u see....so i didn't spend hours trying to get that bluriness jus right....hehe, hope that answers ur question!!

hey, cool, thanks. i didn't realize it would be so easy. i guess i took more a complicated approach, but mine was meant for print and the print turned out pretty good. looks like an airbrushed piece. i love your artwork joy angel. you've definitely got talent. i'd love to see anything new you come up with. thanks for the inspiration.
