Hey all, I made a basketball for a question on the GN tonight and was just lookin for some input. I've stared at it too long and its all starting to run together. I'd love some outside suggestions to add some more realism to it.

Thanks!

That`s good, krets. Only thing..Maybe darken the outer edges a tad for more depth, and scale the texture down a little.
Good one.

Wow, quite realistic. I agree with bob, make the shadows darker, scale down the texture a bit, and also fix the texture so that there isn't a noticeable seam. Try the offset filter.

It looks really good!

To be really picky, I've got a suggestion:

The black lines on a basketball is - if i remember correctly - a bit indented from the orange.
You've got that looking ok, but at the the outlines of the ball it all seems to be at the same level.

I think it would gain extra realism points if you could fix that.

On the other hand I might be dead wrong. Haven't seen a basketball since gym-class back in -90 i think....

yep, nice work krets -

to restate:

scale down the texture slightly

indent the black lines slightly

and then,

you need to make the black lines more narrow on the outside....wider in the middle to simulate the lines moving away from you as they wrap around the ball.

Do those couple things, and I'd say you;ll have perfection.

...of course it'll need a logo

I did some playing of my own. I got pretty decent (still needs work) results by doing all of the lighting in one fell swoop then Spherizing. Just a real quick slop job.

Alpha 1, Noise, Gauss, tweak with Curves (cheap and sleazy).

Alpha 2, 3 lines.

Copy Alpha 2, Spherize, for one straight line and two curved.

Combine Alpha 1 and Alpha 2, basically load and fill.

New Layer, Lighting effects using Alpha 1 & 2 composite.

Spherize that.

Load Alpha with Spherized lines to tweak the the lines in the Layer. Not really necessary because could just Lighting it all up, tweak the lines while still straight, then Sperize it all together. I was basically building a backdoor just in case.

HSV Colorize and add Hard Light Layer with Circular Marque.

I took this route to add depth to the bumpy texture (Lighting, then Spherize). Can't really tell on yours, Krets, but I could be wrong. I went quick and sleazy just to add depth to the texture (the rest of what I did needs some serious work, like the Hard Light Layer).

ok my 2c

'dimples' we'll call them... on a basketball... are all the same size and even tho' they may look like they're randomly placed... they're not. Golf balls have 'dimples' but you know wht I mean

Other than that... I think it's excellent work!!

Also the edge of the ball is really crisp. Since the dimples are just that, it should be reflected on the outer rim (circle) whatever of the ball.

Well, it looks great and only a git like myself would point out that the lines are wrong. Like a baseball, a basketball is made of two pieces that are put together. Each piece looks like an oval that is flattened in the middle. I wish I had a pic to show you, but the lines on the ball aren't exactly right.

This is only a suggestion, and what you have so far is good enough for casual observance.

Um no the lines "look" right a basketball has 2 curved ovals on top of a cross.

Like so

I guess the 2 lines above and below the center line should curve to just about perpendicular the sides

Yeah bitdamaged, but the side opposite the one you've shown has the exact same thing except rotated 90 degrees because the curved ovals shown in your pic are part of the same piece. So it wouldn't be symmetrical when looking at it from the side.

hey krets, i really like that. The one thing that i think could use a bit of fiddlin' is the black lines. After looking at a real ball i think that the 2 curved lines need to be spaced farther from the middle line, curved allitle bit more drastically in other words. Also, as has been said already, there need to be some indention in edge of the ball for the black lines. All in all, great job though. I love texture. Here are some photos of a real basketball for reference.

Good stuff. The image overall looks really good, and I like the way you've got the texture on there really sharp. To me it seems to flatten out on top tho, like the curvature doesn't continue all the way. If you're making it look pretty new, which it seems you are, wouldn't there be a highlight on top?
