I was playing around with the blurs and polar coords and saturation an all that shit. Came up with this. But to me it seems to be missing 'something.' Can't quite put my cursor on it. Tell me what you guys think and what I can do to make it better. Im still trying to figure out how to get the lighting like that on ...

nah, you said "seems to be missing 'something'" to which Soc-X responded with "talent?"

Makes sense.

But the most obvious flaws I see that are making it look very... umm... you know. Missin' something are these--

1) Detail
2) More colors
3) More blurs

Yes? No?

How about making it *interesting* with more ideas? Straight lines intermingled with curved, blurs next to solids.. you get the drift.

Some good comments there. One thing i notice is that it's VERY symmetrical in most of the image. Don't be afraid to break that up, try some things in different directions. That'll start you in more the right direction i think...

Gotta agree with fig and some of the others, you're taking far too simple an approach. Look at how many levels/layers/blend modes there are in your 'inspiration' document. Looking at yours I can see white/light gray blurs and blends on a black background with text that has a 0deg motion blur and a mabye a difference layer? Try other images, stock art, buildings etc. What you're aspiring to is layers atop layers of blend modes, vertical lines, micro-text, blurs - motions and hand, and with some of thehorusprojects work embed 3d objects.

Start large, make some shapes, hell build a whole file of just shapes you think might work, find stock photos you might want to put in, play with blend modes and then just start dropping stuff in to see how it works. Experiment with blend modes, blurs, text.
Here are some wallpapers with all the things mentioned above.

**315k**
**485k**

Just keep adding and taking away from it until you like how it looks, its all about experimentation.

Lack of colour variation. Basically what Twitch said about more colours. Definitely break that symmetry.

Moaiz, was that second link you posted a stock image that you just edited?

The second link has about 6 'stock' images of scaffolding and buildings along with a 3d object, and various other misc things. So in a way it was stock images at one time. Or did you mean was it just one single image that I edited?

hahah, so you read that huh Bob?
I had a whole 'design lemmings' and 'digital sheep' thing I was working on as a takeoff on so many of the same styles floating around the web but I crashed between backups and lost a whole series of wallpapers and some cool lemmings/sheep I made in freehand for the project.
