Sounds like a job for Pen tools. Get to know them. They are your friend.

couldn't be closer to the truth, the moment you get an understanding of the pen tool and get to know it... EVERYTHING will be a little easier, from drawing to selecting and more...

If you need some help with it, I teach Photoshop at Bond University, so I could give you a hand...

That little round, black button at the bottom of the Paths palette.

Item B. Not really a tut on Paths, but does give some background info on the first page.

Why does the pen tool sometimes automatically add a big curve to a line after I've put down a curved node? Is there some way to make it stop that?

I know if you lay a point, keep the mouse button down and drag some more, it will Brazier curve it. That will affect how the line goes between points. One curved point between two non-curved points is a curved, 2-segment line.

I lay my points, then curve 'em as needed.

Sounds like you will need to get to know the Convert Point tool. Click the point then adjust the dohickies independently. If you just want one side of the point curved, then bring the other dojobbie in towards the point.

Um...

Blah! I just became inarticulate.

Gotta be more specific dude. I've never encountered that. Tell us what, when, how stuff

You have the pen tool options set to "rubber band"? I personally can't use the tool without that setting. Maybe you're seeing a "proposed" path before you actually make the real one. Maybe your bezier handle from the previous point is huge.

Hard to say.

Elaborate.
