All I can tell you is that the artists at the Horus Project arevery sophisticated. I've seen stuff there that had to have been done with 3D StudioMax, I've seen others that I wouldn't even begin to try to reverse engineer. This one in particular ..... well, maybe you'll get somewhere with Polar Coord, but it won't be a one step process. There will be many layers, many applications of the filter on different shapes, many blending modes, and many unexpected surprises along the way (some of them might even be pleasant surprises!).

It's good to set you sights high, challange yourself by aspiring to the heights. Just don't get frustrated and quit. Believe me - the image you are looking at didn't just happen, and there really isn't any way for me or anyone here to look at it and tell you what steps to take.

You might find it helpful to do a screen capture and keep that open on your desktop while you work in Photoshop. It's useful to have the original available for reference.

Good luck. Don't forget to show us what you come up with!

i would say its mostly pen tool fills with radial blurs and of course, blending mode tweaks, lotsa airbrush in there two, some pencil for the small detailed parts...

...you just have to make it although a few techniques like polar coords might help.

I'm still playing around with the polar coords filter, but how the hell does it come out like that?

Just did some playing with combining Polar Coords and Snowy Mask. So far just some preliminary goofing around, but I think there is some great potential. Even some preliminary Wave variations. All those cool curvey Copy/Gauss shapes and the Snowy Mask element. Tasty.

Guyo ~ I think you're trying to do something that is a touch beyond your capabilities. It's rather obvious how image (and all of them since linked) was done. A combination of blurs, layer modes (read: color dodge) and airbrushing. If you can't come up with it, don't get frustrated. Take your time. Start at several-times larger than what you're planning to use (i.e. if you want the image to be 640x480, start at 6400x4800) and size it down to get clarity. Airbrushing, layer modes, pencilling, zooming @ 1600%... they're all related.

This is not a one-step-photoshop-idea sort of thing.

well it think all the images shown here are abstract compositions only,
not much airbrush, not much selections, not much filters and nothing like that.

Just a lot of layers blending modes, and erase tool.

*sigh*

I think the thing to remember is that often this come by accident... no matter how much we all try to avoid it - I would admit that some of my best work has come by accident and by playing with this setting or that filter.

I must admit that it does take some talent to know what to do and when to press Ctrl+Z... but that only comes with time...

Guyo - you're on the right track - sitting down and spending time hands-on and just experimenting is the way to go... like the msg that is displayed on the gurusnetwork page - most of us had to learn photoshop by ourselves - beyond a certain point, no-one can teach you this stuff.

Look around at the great tute sites on the web... I can recommend a few if you like... download actions and then rip them apart... If you're not sure how to do that, go back a step further and find out what the hell an action is!!

Above all else though - congrats for recognizing something beautiful and aspiring to it...

You say snowy mask, right? Look at the waves and guess how this was made.... use the tips in the tut of the link, but instead of using curves, make an adjustment layer (yup, curves) and move the layer set to difference.

I had never heard of the technique (snowy mask), and was just fiddling with blending modes until I came up with the animation. at first I used it in a really dull sig (below).

someone metioned the animation looked a bit like light reflecting in water. I later drew the dolphin to see how the water effect looked. Quite funny that you can come up with the same technique independently

Edit: the music in the flash movie is by Moby. Most of his songs are *much* better.
I'll be on holidays for the next two weeks, so this may be the last post I make here 'til I come back from that holiday. oh, and don't post any goodbyes here (like anyone would), since a) it ruins the thread b) I won't be able to read them anyways. See ya.
