lately i've been creating more images for the web, as well as wallpapers and the like. i've been saving these images as jpegs instead of just keeping them as psd's as i usually do. the jpegs that result appear much darker than what i'm seeing in the psd. is there something i can adjust in photoshop to correct this, or is it something to do with the system settings? oh yeah, i'm using ps 5 and windows 98. thanks!

how much are you compressing the jpeg file? thats what seems to effect the image quality the most

If you're really that short for space zip your PSD's. Just to check I just zipped a 102meg PSD file into a 64meg PSD file so thats what like 63% compression on that file alone? Keep in mind that with JPG's you're running a compression algorithm that basically breaks your image into rectangles and drops out the 'unnecessary' information. Anytime you edit a copy the quality is going to be less than the origional. My .02¢, I say keep every PSD you might, mabye, someday, possibly, ever want to pop open again. Keep everything, storage space is cheap, time and effort spent creating is not.

<edit>Oh yeah I didnt answer the question...</edit>

I would play with the levels a bit to see if that works, mabye hue saturation too or try what I first mentioned ^^^

Sounds like a color management thing. How do you create the jpegs? Save for web, or just save-as? Under the File menu, what do you have set for RGB? the generic sRGB or something else like colormatch or adobeRGB?

What do you view the jpegs in? Photoshop, or a web browser?

Useful test might be to save the same image as psd and jpeg and open both together side by side.

There's nothing I know of inherent to jpeg that would cause it to get darker. But there are lots of things that could cause Photoshop or a browser to display it differently.

steve, i fooled around with my rgb settings and now my jpegs are very similar to my psd's. i hadn't even thought to play with those, thanks!

moaiz, i always save all my psd's. made the mistake of deleting some, or flattening them. certainly, have come to regret that on a few instance.

thanks everyone for the quick and extremely helpful responses. this board is really great for people of any skill level as both a resource and an inspiration. i'm really glad that i've been hanging around here lately.

thanks again

The other day happens that what we see in screen was not what we got on printed...
So, i learned that is good to set the photoshop profile as the same than your monitor (for screen) or the same that your printer
Image > mode> convert profile or assign profile
That was good....

Well, I noticed, too. But you did say show-and-tell before you left, so I figured I'ld wait for your own thread. Now it sounds like you are either too busy or don't have the pictures on your comp/server yet or something. Or maybe you are just too busy.

Welcome home, but you better watch out because there are a few new sheriffs in town.
