I know you can use the guassian blur method combined with render/lighting effects to make the illusion of depth in photoshop. I'm wondering if I can load a selection in a channel and use the airbrush to do the same effects as the guassian blur.

you can do anything to a channel that you could with a grayscale file - paint, select, filter, apply image, calculations.

Just remember that if you are planning to use the channel to ultimately make a selection, white selects fully, black not at all, gray in between. But you knew that.

Sure.
You can do most anything in a channel that you can do in a layer.
You can certainly paint your own channel to be used for lighting effects...or displacement or glass or any of the other filters that require the use of another channel.
If you're good with the brush, that sounds like an excellent way to develop your own shapes/textures...instead of relying on simple gaussian blur.

You can also copy out of your color channels to help make masks and selections, which gets to be fun.

Let' say that you have a shape in a layer with a background, like this:

and want to make selection to use the airbrush, well, use the airbrush to load the selection!!
1.) Deselect everythig

2.) Change to Quick Mask mode

3.) Select your Shape (layer)

4.) Use the Airbrush tool to make your selection (it'll degradade it)

5.) Exit quick mask and fill your selection with your shadow or lighting color!!

Repeat the same for the upper light!

you can also do intersting things with the alpha channel and .png transparency using the airbrush.

you know, I never owned a note book in school, now that I'm done with school, I have a very detailed notebook, and I'm eager to learn every day..... Wakkos, that was a great tip. I was not shady at all with that excellent illistrated discription. that looks like the easy way to do it. before I would airbrush down some white, distort polar's, then move it till I got it where I liked it... just to find out its not the correct size. wow thats a big help. too bad my note book is about 2 years too late.

I don't use Quick Mask too often, but doing something like that visually on the canvas in a non-destructive manner is pretty damn keen.

Yes, this is very interesting when you have a picture with some really dark areas and want to adjust the levels, selecting in this way (wether the airbrush or the gradient tool) won't let any jaggie(?) edge....
