here is a texture I'm working on. I'm going for a well used, kinda grungy wood floor. I need some suggestions on making the texture come to life more. Big thanks to any replys

HS, your a good guy, I was struggling getting it fixed the whole time
I'm looking for specific, technical answers, since I don't know the tools of photoshop all that well, any tips stated will help a lot. All I really did with this one was adjust the curves when I got done.

I don't see your image.... maybe it's just my internet connection... or maybe your host site doesn't let you show images... I just thought I better say something before the smartass remarks start about how your texture looks like a big red X...

EDIT: Great, it WAS my internet connection... right after posting that, it appeared. try adding somee stain to the wood...

I hit yours with curves again.. brought out the hue and darkened the darks. Then randomly attacked it with a small hard brush, lights on top of darks, from the middle values out and sharpening the surface edges with the darkest value.

Varience is what your after. Work almost randomly, vary everything you have - hue, value, light etc. Dirty it up with a custom brush (odd looking ones are cool) and the more cross strokes there are the more worn it looks. When a couple nice patterns appear, pick them off with the stamp tool and shift them around.

Below is 10 minutes of playing with yours. =)

excellent post weahah! that opened my eyes a bunch, now I know about adjusting hue/saturation, replacing color, and all that other crap on the image/adjust menu! what did you play with to get it that molded white look? that second texture I posted was my second attempt after reading HS's post, before reading your post weadah. Any other adjustments/tools you would suggest?

Make nice with the brush tool, and some custom brushes. Also if you work with blending modes (the "normal" "multiply" "overlay" etc. box above your layers palette) you'll find that you can work more plausible variances into your textures.

Oh, and look at some wood while you do it....and then some other wood. Then try looking at some wood too.

Now zip up, pervert, and get back to brushing in and making adjustments. These were done the same way as Wead mentioned (smart bastard, he is), some saturation and contrast adjustments and some custom brushing (and one sharpening...I admit it..~ducks~).

Now go....gooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo, and teach thyself.

Cool...I've got no idea whta you started with now, cause you replaced the image up the top with the finished product. A piece of advice: it makes good sense to save each version in a new file, and post each new file as they come, bewcause that way we can see the progression from crap to craptastic.

(not that you're work is neccesarily crap, it's just a generalisation)

Cheers mate
