That's pretty nice work mobrul

The overall effect is pretty realistic...I like the lighting.

Couplethings I would suggest -
1) the black lines that signify the edge where the 'axle' sets into the base are a bot too black...I'd dull them down a bit to fit in better.

2) the actual clock mechanism takes a turn form the noce hard metal you've acheived to a fake-metal/plastic liek appearance. I'd bump up some extra highlights to get more of a shine there.

3) Where the desk??? ( )

Thank you all for your replies. I must say that this is absolutely the very best piece of 'art' I've ever done in my entire life. I stared at this stupid clock on my desk for an eternity. I'm still not completely satisfied. Something seems wrong with the perspective...but I don't know quite what it is. Also, DL you are right. The 'texture' doesn't seem quite right. The clock that is sitting on my desk is made of this really smooth, shiny plastic. I can't seem to figure out what it is about the reflections that tells my eyes that the clock is smooth plastic. The other thing that is bothering me is the center of the clock face. In real life, center black circle is actually recessed about 1.5cm. There exists a piece of clear plastic that covers that area. I know that there are highlights, reflections, etc. off the clear plastic, but I can't seem to recreate them. Everything I try there seems so very fake. The last thing is the ends of the 'axle'. They are slightly rounded in real life and I can't quite get it right.

Anybody else with thoughts or help?

This is pretty good, I thought it was a 3D rendered picture. It looks sort of plasticy or fake though.

Good work. Cool learning piece for sure. Yah perspective is off a touch - I am thinking set guides, define a horizon and vanishing point to keep it tight. Always begin like that, makes it easy to extrude shapes in the correct directions.

Your missing a shadow/ reflection or two- One hard shadow below the face- and one to match your light source. Self shadows/reflections help the read.

Not sure if you painted this on a white BG or not, but if so - bad idea. White throws your eyes specially when painting greys. Choose an almost neutral brown as BG, anything but white.

Texture - The basis for a heavy steel mebbe. Plastic will come up with harder light points... and more of/varied too. Following the surface, find the highest values in the base and brighten up the centre areas some. Basically the hard bits need to be harder.

A semi transparent cover over the face - Inset the edge to begin with, slightly. Make a couple greyish streaks (with a brush set to screen perhaps) following the angle of the light. Back off the hands a bit in value and kinda dull-off/semi-erase/remove the portions covered by the new reflections.

Over it?s a basis for something pretty good. What I think its missing most is detail. Keep at it, its going well.

Did some more work today. I increased the contrast. I think that helped. Also I took a stab at the reflection on the clear plastic cover, not sure I like it though.

Desk Clock 2

Weadah, you talk about defining a horizon and vanishing points. Uh, I'm not sure I know how to do that. Can you point me in the right direction?

I darkened the shadow under the clock. Also changed the BG to a neutral brown. You are right, easier to see things. Increasing the contrast helped a lot of the picture and hurt some of it too. Still not happy.

lookin better - just keep working it down..... is this the actual size? The regular method is to paint really big then shrink down - that allows more control (or to be less precise with your brush strokes...one or the other heh), worth a mention.

That's really cool. God, my job is getting to me though, I looked at the picture and instantly started looking at how I would create it in LiveMotion. I made a clock with moving hands that maintained an accurate time, but it didn't look very fancy... I look at your picture and I suddenly saw the polygons and objects needed to make the same image in LM but with the moving hands. I will have to retain this thread in my bookmarks to remind myself once I'm done with my current project. Good work!

If by Flash you mean the program to make Flash files, yes. BTW - I just realized... people might not sit and watch the clock... it keeps accurate time. If you go to your time settings and change the time, the clock updates itself.

I don't mean to decrease interest in Mobrul's awesome clock, but I just uploaded an updated version of the LiveMotion clock... now there is a second hand so you don't get bored waiting for the minute hand to move... but wait! That' not all... I added some extra shading to various areas I thought needed it. Enjoy!

Well. Lets see. You "borrowed" his image, I?m assuming because you don?t have it in you to make your own. You added some "clock code" and post about in the Photoshop Forum, not your own thread, but here, because you "don't mean to decrease interest in Mobrul's" image?

I recall your whine and bitch act about this very thing. Over and over. But its cool when its *you* right?

I wont bother to comment on "your" work.

I have to say, neat clock there but I really would have asked permission to use it first.

Nice job mobrul and sorry man, I didn't find that guy you were talking about when I went to Kirksville. I went to that place you asked me to but no one seemed to know who the guy was. Maybe I was just asking the wrong people.

Why the hell did I just post that? No idea.

Anyway, back to the topic of the hour, any new versions to show off?

I really think that clock is awesome, but I agree with you on the perspective thing (I'm not sure if this was answered, sinse I just browse threw the personal/nontech posts) but I think the very outside edges of the clock need to come in a bit more for the full frontal 3d look. They look like they have a slight angle, maybe just a little bit more, might try a simple noise texture with very low contrast for a texture prob you where talking about.

Lookin good their Morbal. Actualy, I think the clock itself looks pretty darn spunky. I wouldn't mind a clock like that myself. Keep posting your progress, I want to see how this turns out.

Actually, Weadah, I thought about those things before I posted, which is why I mentioned that my post was not an attempt to take the stage from Mobrul. I didn't want to take over the thread (which, by the way, people still do, and I stay quiet because it's become common place here to insult people who speak out about things), so I gave acclaim to his image beforehand. He posted a really nice image of a clock, and I just added moving hands. I won't go into an argument here with you because I don't want to ruin his thread by changing the topic. The topic is the image of his clock. I will say this and let that be that.

A. I never claimed what I drew to be my own original idea. I even stated far in advance that I wanted to see if I could replicate the image in the product I work on.

B. Other people take someone else's work, edit it and post it back up... usually for demonstration. All I was doing was demonstrating the ability of livemotion to create animation... and I made sure not to take credit for the idea, to point out that the thread was about his image, and especially, I never touched his image. I simply looked at it.

Mobrul, I apologize for not getting your permission to recreate your nice clock image in a different program.

Oh hell.
First of all, I'm back. Conference went really well last week. I'm really tired, but back.
I don't much care if HS wants to do his thing with that picture. Maybe other people aren't as forgiving or...(can't think of quite the right word). Anyway, I've got too much other stuff to worry about before I start worrying about people masturbating (figuratively) with the clock picture. And that's all he's doing...not like it's good enough to sell or anything. I'm here to practice, learn, get better, be around those who do what I do. If you want to be good, hang around the people who are good. Some of you are real good, that's why I'm here.
My Official Declaration
Anyone may use anything that I post, now, before, and into the future, as a basis for practice and/or learning. If you want to sell it, we'll have to talk. If you're just playin', do whatever you want.

Now, let's all open PS and paint!
mobrul

PS (to Krets) Sorry. He's probably dead. That's too bad. Actually I'm a little surprised that you did it. After I wrote that e-mail to you I reconsidered and thought maybe that was a bit too personel for this, uh, 'relationship' (what else does one call it?) that we have here. Anyway, I hope you had a good time. It really is a cool little town.
