Errr...
That was for Mac... i'm a PC guy!
Or should I assume that icons on both platforms are the same?

Karl most of that info at http://www.iconfactory.com/ is not for the mac and even if they are you could easily use your know how and make them windows icons.

Try this http://newnet.themes.tucows.com/editors/editicon.htm and see the software sites for links to tutorials and info about creating icons (just a link to software for creating icons).

Just one question "Do you like working in a pixelated screen and working pixel by pixel level?" If yes carry on and have fun, if not then stop and think about it first. Making icons is not hard if you have a good knowledge of how pixels are placed to create images, if you haven?t then your going to have trouble.

Hope it helps and have fun I did

I'm not a fan of pixel by pixel manipulation... I'm not sure what my choices are in the matter. I'm assuming this: draw things really small in photoshop, then copy / paste into an app that will save it appropriately as an ICO file.

(and hey -- why doens't photoshop offer this????)

Does this sound like a good plan of attack?

Sure, karl, the only problem is you'll have to do this several times. A single ico file holds images for different desktop resolutions. So you could have a 16-bit color 64x64 image, an 8 bit color 32x32 image and a 256 color 16x16 image. Axialis ax-icons (sorry, don't have the link right now but do a search on google for it) can help you create the ico file and even makes it easy to switch between resolutions. Their bitmap editor is no photoshop, but it's good enough for making pixel images.

If you're doing commercial work, then you may have to purchase the license.

As far as copy and pasting from photoshop, you have to make sure that you save the file as a bmp and that you maintain the proper color depth (e.g. 16-bit etc.)

MicroAngelo is a program that works good for this kind of stuff, I think.
