CReate a new channel and make your white-planet-shape there

Make a new layer and fill it with black.
Make another layer and load the planet selection
Press 'D' to select black as front color and white as background color
Make a gradient inthat new layer from top left to bottom right (Black to white)
Dupicate the layer
Filter Difference Clouds (Filter --> Render --> Difference Clouds) Try a little with this until you have a desired texture.
Load the planet selection, invert it, fill with blackd, deselect.
Aply filter poster edges (Filters --> Artistic --> Poster Edges)
Settings:
Edge Thickness: = 7
Edge Intensity = 1
Posterization = 4
Create a new layer, fill it with black, Aply Lens Flare (Filters --> Render --> Lens Flare)
Settings:
Brightness: 100%
Lens Type: 105mm Prime.
Set layer blending to Screen

suggestions are looking good so far. Filter>distort>spherize might help.

The highlight of the event horizon?

I brushed it...~shrug~ A proper glare should bend around, and highlight in streaks from the focii, so there it bee, just a blurred flare, and thin streaks from it, with diffused light.

The recollection comment was about the "familiar" comment.... etc. etc. and I was just waiting for mikeah.

I guess you meant me? (the only other option I can think of would me mr Milker) There's nothing really useful I can mention, unless Motomo wants to animate it...

The dark part of the planet (which is actually invisible) (duh) was airbrushed, and I got the texture with [filter>noise>noise (400%)] and then several times [filter>artistic>plastic wrap] To make the texture 'wrap' around the planet, I used [filter>distort>spherize]

Let's see....
Went really simple with this one. Just some clouds and highlights/shadows with the airbrush.

Sorry that its obscenely large.

DG=> How did you make that perfect crescent/halo?
I tried to fill another layer with yellow, move it a bit and then blur it, but then the halo is surrounding the entire planet (but it has the right diffuse colorspread). I also tried to make a crescent shape and filled it with feather-yellow and layereffects, but I have a hard time making it look so diffuse as yours. Do you wanna share how you did it?

so he wants a star behind the planet, huh?

well, this is obviously a blatant rip off of DG now, but i was just testing his technique so that i could better communicate it to you.

so select the planet's transparency, contract it by a few, say 8 pixels. fill it with orange, move it down and to the left, gaussian blur it. add a layer mask with the planet's transparency. paint in the orange glow on the planet. for the white highlight, i used a heavily modified lense flare couple with airbrushing. hope it helps ya.

Tnx for the reply, but could you deepen ya method? How do you achive that diffuse glow? -feather selection or...?

Woa!! Exellent Mbridge!!! Thanks for helping me with that shine!!!!!

Edit>
Ok, I want to say something: I think that your center shine are to pronounced, they look like another different shine, not the star, is just my opinion, what do you think? A little bit little will help?

Edit II> Or maybe bigger and blurred!

Ok, if i have to spell it out that much....

Control-Click the layer with the planet's shape on it. Go to Select > Modify > Contract, and enter a value of about 8 pixels (smaller for smaller planets). Fill the selection with orange, deselect, and gaussian blur by about 8 pixels. Place this new layer behind the planet layer(s) and move it down and to the left until it looks right. Select the transparency of the planet again, and with the layer of the glow still selected, go to Layer > Add Layer Mask > Hide Selection. Now, create a new layer above your planet layer(s) and grab the same color orange. Select the transparency of the planet again, and paint a nice orange glow along the inside of the planet using a low opacity, feather, kinda large brush. Now create a new layer and either use a lense flare or the brush to create the bright white in the middle of the glow. If you can't recreate the effect from this description....don't ask me.

and now i am leaving the house, why would i stay here any longer on a friday night?

And then you get picky about saturations, decide that someone has done some great work, but then thieve it for some retouching to light refractions, textures, and light perspectives

Nice work, Mike, it's looking really good.
