I guess it's just me........but I'll *never* understand this.

'I want to draw a picture of (insert object here), show me a tutorial'

NO!

GO look at eyes. Find out what makes them look the way they do. Then draw them. Over and over.

*Then* go to photoshop and do the same types of things you did in real life....

ya know?

No matter what tricks you might pick up for 'quick and easy' eyes, they won't help if you haven't spent the time studying and drawing.

Yep, I have to go with DL on this one. "Creating Realistic Eyes" is never going to wash as a tutorial, because it won't take any variances into account. Part of making digital "art" is to give your interpretation of what you see.

Photorealism is great, but if you want to make it, then try staring at the photo first. I can't say that there's any merit in following someone else's work, other than to teach you technique....but if it's technique that you need, then following any tutorial (especially Doc's) on the creation of glass spheres should help you understand that.

If you want to make eyes....go stare at eyes....go take pictures of the real thing, and try to translate through what you know of PS, or what you can learn from reading the fucking manual, or going through some understanding steps at the Gurus Network or any other PS tutorial based site (cough-ozones-cough). You're not going to get a tell all story of understanding from a tutorial, and ultimately, even if you did, you'd just be creating so-and-so's eyeball over again.

The PhotoShop manual comes with PS when you buy the software Nell....and "the fucking manual" is just an excerpt from the ever popular advice:
RTFM
Read The Fucking Manual

If you don't have a manual, I think you can send for a replacement with your proof of purchase.

Once again, though...read the rest of the post, and not just the word "fucking" this time...hopefully it helps.

Nell, they are just telling you to 'get your hands dirty'. That means, make some eyes. Use some of the tuts to get the roundness, then play. Post what you came up with here. From there, we'll help you further. Many techniques are like that. So fire up PS, and get busy.

One important point - you need to realize that the highlights will actually be reflecting off of the cornea, and so they will not stop at the edge of the iris, they will continue over the white as well, although they may distort a little because of the bulge in the cornea around the iris.

Oooh, and skin would help

Nice work on the iris, Minkies. On the *ball* part, it seems as if it`s oval shaped instead of round. Maybe try to fade the shadow into more of a sphere. At the outside edge of the cornea the dark should fade in more , not be so defined. And the muscles of the pupil should stretch into the iris along the striations you have defined so well.

In short, a great start, just blend the parts together ,and round the ball off a bit.

How do you make that iris line texture? Filter or a combination?

Filter>Distort>polar coordinates
or filter>blur>radial blur

Use these with Filter>noise>add noise together with filter>blur>gaussian blur, throw in image>adjust>hue/saturation (CTRL-U) for a color and it makes a nice start.

(800x800 doc)
100w*800h rectangle (top to bottom)
Wind (blast on both sides) (a few times each)
Copy, Paste, Move 110p left, Copy, Paste, Move 110p left, Copy, Paste, Move 110p left
Merge layers (not with background)
Distort, Polar Coordinates, Copy middle, paste into "dohnut" shape
For the iris itself - number of layers - donut

Edit: Skin? now theres a mission....
