Found an example of the effect i wanna do over at fontalicious

notice the "drawing" in the background of the magnum thing, how do i
manipulate a photo to give that sorta effect as though it's like a drawing?

just top of my head I'd say make the pic a 2-color gif and use diffusion, but that may come out wrong. I think it demands a pretty clear picture with strong contrast to work, so you might want to turn it into grayscale first ant work the light/contrast a bit.

but I might be wrong here (have no time to open ps at the moment. workworkwork)

we had the same topic a few months back. Darkgarden answered it I think (if my old decrepid mind remembers), sumin to do with the threshold command.

Check the archives for it.. not sure if the title of the thread is obvious? I had a quick shufty and couldnt find it but it might be there still (Ps archive)...

still , threshold might be it?

Levels or posterize should do the trick, with a little tweeking.

Uh, maestro, didn't we just deal with this exact same idea here?:
http://www.ozoneasylum.com/Forum3/HTML/001733.html

Just work with all the methods given there, and you should start working it out. I really don't think another thread for this is necessary.

Five minutes in PS with one photo, using threshold, blurs, levels and channels. Almost all can be done with just gaussian blur, and threshold commands.

TRY maestro You'll get it.

that i cannot seemed to be able to get such "clear and distinct" type of result like the one
DarkGarden posted. That's like VERY clear.. hmm.. *maestro struggling with ps*

ALL your help and advices are deeply appreciated. Thanks a lot for helping out someone

Okee, fast and furious, let's see what happens.
Crisp edges for lineart:

1) Select All, then Copy the photo and Paste into a new Channel.

2) Set the Brightness and Contrast. Contrast should be high, at almost 100, play with the brightness as required (each pic is different with the levels, tones, and initial balance.

3) Do a Gaussian Blur at a low setting just to get the jagged edges gone, and have nice, smooth edges.

4) Open the Levels dialogue box, and adjust the levels to get crisp edge transitions. Play with this, but keep in mind that crisp transitions happen when you bring the slider arrows closer together. Keep zooming in and testing your levels each time. You don't want jaggies, but you don't want to keep too much blur either. You'll get the hang of it.

5) Invert your Channel by using Ctrl+i (Command+i on a MAC)

6)Make a Selection of your Channel (Ctrl+left click), and switch back to your Layers Palette.

7) Fill your selection with whatever colour you want.

Hope it helps.

Peter

WOW!
oh man, DarkGarden, thanks A LOT! I mean, you really went thru a lot of trouble just to
teach me that, with all the screen captures and all. now, i feel a bit bad that you went
thru all that. REALLY REALLY appreciated this wonderful gesture! this is the first forum
that i came across that has very helpful people like you, vogonpoet and a lot of other
people who are very keen to help out newbies!

I was like speechless when i saw the screencaptures..

No problem. I mean it when I say that I "Hope it helps".

As long as you get the concept now, then I'm glad I could share.

People around the Asylum (in the majority at least) are here to teach and to learn. It's about the best place to really deal with folks who are looking to share their knowledge, and yours. Hey, someday you might be showing me new methods in PS

If there's any other questions, I'm sure myself, or the other people who have been giving you tips here would go this far, or more to help.

Peter

thks a lot for your encouragement, i too, hope that i can share things with you guys but
judging by the level of expertise, heh.. i think it's gonna be a LONG while before anything
like that is gonna happen.. haahh nevertheless i will always keep a lookout on where i can
help.. LOL

been trying out the stuff that you guys shared with me.. had a little success here and there
after some trials and experiments.. i think the photo itself plays a part.. some photos i tried,
the effect din turn out too good...

anyway, glad to have learnt a bit of concept esp in areas like 'levels', some channel stuff which
i have never touched before...
