Could anyone explain how to do a ripping effect with Photoshop 6.0? What I want is a vertical strip and have the right edge of it (facing the rest of the page) to be jagged like a ripped sheet of paper. The vertical strip would also be a different color.

1. Rip several sheets of paper.

2. Look at ripped sheets of paper.

3. Open PS and duplicate.

I think sometimes people think there should be a filter for everything you want to do.

There isn't.

Play around with the pen tool to get your basic ripped edge shape then use some brushes, dodge/burn, and etc. to touch up the edge. There really isn't a quick and easy way to do this if you want it to look convincing.

If you don't care about convincing, take a hard edged eraser and go to town on the side you want ripped.

If you aren't *too* hung up on realism but aren't real good with erasing...

Make sure the "paper" is on a layer above the background, and select that layer.
use the rectangular marquee to select the portion of the paper that will be removed. (alternatively, select the area that will remain and then inverse the selection.)
feather generously - maybe 8 or so?
enter quickmask mode
apply one of the edge filters like, uhhh shoot, I can't remember the names - sprayed strokes or something???
Exit quickmask mode and hit delete.

Touch up with a shadow or something to call attention to the ragged edge.

Krets - your 3 step simplification is amusing, and it's increasingly tempting for you big shots to toss this snippy shit off, and sometimes it's more than justified, but I wouldn't make it your first reaction to what we have to assume to be a sincere question, 'kay?

Spatter, I believe.

If you've got a scanner, then scan some in.

Now that's just what I had in mind krets!

Sometimes I can see the steps in my head, sometimes I can't.

Sigh - if I had enough ram I could kep Photoshop and the browser going at the same time

I realize you guys probably find questions like this annoying but I was just trying to figure out the tools to use for the effect I'm looking for. I didn't expect a specific filter to be devoted to this. Thanks for the help though.

kretsminky... good art tip, and good link

ok, my turn....

1) Create layer and fill it with white (for old parchment effect pick to different yellow colors for the foreground and background colors. Then FILTER > RENDER > CLOUDS.)
2) Go into quick mask mode and paint outline of paper.
3) While still in quick mask, FILTER > PIXELATE > CRYSTALLIZE.
4) Do a couple of low number masks followed by a higher number then by several low numbers (eg. 3; 3; 3; then 10; followed by 3; 3; 3; 3) until it looks good
5) Go back into Standard mask mode, inverse and delete. (It is easier to see the torn paper with a dark background, so make new black background layer).
6) One step more would be to add a sandstone texture to the paper (FILTER > TEXTURE > TEXTURIZE ) with a light relief.

Cheers!

if you're intent on a quick, easy way, then spatter will do it for ya. this (hi-rez - low-rez (btw.. strong language. )) was done with spatter. a few applications really. glaring errors in it, but it's a wip. i'll post the finished product if i ever do finish
