I am interested in doing the following.

A text that is exactly like the "transparent" logo on doc's tutorial section.

I want to make a text that is basically only an outline but it's in a 3D almost look to it. As well as the background this layer is put on will easily show through the middle. Exactly like that link above how it is like a glass text with only a outline soft shadow.

Can anyone help me understand how to do this? I looked in the text styles but didn't see where I could accomplish this.. Any tutorials you can send me?

I use Adobe Photoshop version 6.01. Thanks very much.

OK, assuming you have your Background as a Layer, and a type Layer above it,

1. Rasterize your type layer

2. make two copies of it, they will be your outline layers

3. offset one of the copies some pixels (how broad an outline you want) up and left (Filters > other > offset)

4. offset the other copy the same amount down and right

5. goto original type layer, do Selection > load selection, layer transparency

6. keeping this selection, goto both copy layers and press delete.

7. Fill what remains of the up-left offsetted Layer with white (e.g. Load selection, layer transparency and edit > fill)

8. Fill what remains of the down-right offsetted Layer with black

9. Turn down the opacity (Slider in the layer palette) of the original type layer to make your background show through, also play around with Layer blending modes.

10. Apply a bit of Gaussian Blur to your outline Layers, tweak opacity and blending modes for better looks.

Mobrel, his tutorial was how to make a transparent GIF file. I just want to know how to make that transparent text in adobe 6 :-)

thank you overlord. Do you happen to have an image of the final outcome of this?

The main reasoning for this text is to become a sort of glass WATERMARK on top of some of my images. I can easily just overlay a plain black text and have the opacity level at like 10-15% but that will cause the inside of the text to interupt the image underneath.

That text there in that link is like a glass like effect.. that is exactly what I would like to do. Now, since the image would be different underneath (glass text would be applied over top of images), I need this to be a layer I can easily copy/paste the layer on top of the new images that are just opened up in Adobe PS 6.

Doing the instruction you gave, will this lock the background of the text when it was create? or will it be a transparency text that will allow the background image to show through the transparent text interior? (which is what I need)

Can the Text Style on the layers pallete accomplish the same thing somehow rather than all the instructions? Usually it can do some pretty snazzy FX :-)

still trying to figure out what you want..



if this is the case, the steps are just about the same as before..

rasterize text layer, duplicate twice. fill one with black, the other with white. now move one down one pixel, and right one pixel.

now. say the white one is the one you moved. CTRL + click this layer, and set the black layer active. Lock transparent pixels, and fill with 50% grey. Deselect, and now CTRL + click the black layer. Set the white layer active, lock transparent pixels, and fill w/ 50% grey again.

now flatten these layers, and set them to softlight. you can move this layer from psd to psd too.

Well, you can always turn the opacity of your type layer to zero, then you will see just the outline, if that´s what you want.
If you want the background to appear lighter through your text, fill your type layer with white and turn opacity down (that´s what doc did on that picture, you can see how the part of the background that is behind the text appears lighter than the rest of the background).

And yes, after you are done tweaking the opacities of the text and outline layers, you can merge them into one layer for easier copying, and whatever you put underneath it will show through.

And I dunno about text styles since I don´t use them.

Yes it is, and the author visits these halls now and then. It's the best one I've read for some of PS6's advanced layer effect capabilities - especially the ability to make the content of the layer invisible and just leave the effects!

It's copyrighted 1 year ago so it's not necessarily "coming soon" how did come across this tutorial? (it's hiddden in their sub categories)

I came across it because the author announced it here at the Asylum. Consider it a hidden jewel. I assume that the scope of the whole site is ambitious enough that "coming soon" should be considered in the geological sense!
