Hey all.
I'm trying to make this globe like image (you know... wire frame globes), but I don't want curved lines, I want them straight. Is there an easier way to do this other than making a smooth globe and using it as a reference for where to draw straight lines?

I have a funny feeling I didn't make any sense... ugh... oh well..

Something like either of these?

The first one is just Line tool, Elliptical Marque + Edit > Stroke. The second one is a copy of the first one, but with Spherize tossed in.

EXACTLY like that, but with straight lines... like this, but not as ugly and flat... (see, i can do it the LONG way... i'm just wondering if there's a short way)....

How did you get the 2nd one to have the angle?

Might want to try a grid and Spherize. See Phong's tut. Or are you looking for more a "globe" look? If you are looking for more of a globe look, let me know.

In my above example, the polar map is actually bigger than what I'm showing. I made a circular selection off center, Spherize, Selection > Inverst (ctrl + shift + i), fill with black (or delete, I can't remember which).

BTW, if you have a 3D prog, that's probably the way to go.

he wants a boxy round thingy. He wants it to be a sphere, but he wants the lines to all be straight, not curved... so it would not be a round smooth sphere. Right?

no quick easy way to do that in PS, you need a 3d program to get it perfect.

When you run Spherize, there is a drop-down at the bottom. Maybe that's the way to go, but I'm still confused.

I'm still confused too.

But, if you want what I think you want, no - there is no shortway.

Of course the "long" way - drawing a dozen straight lines or so..... - is *not* very long. You could have done it several times over by now

Yeah... it is a wee bit of a confusing topic isn't it? I think the jist of the matter is that it ain't gonna be easy. Thanks for all the help from those who could follow my poopy descriptions of what I was after

Is the word we`re looking for here metahedron ?

Only way I can think of is set a bunch of guides, crossing on the vertices, and use the pencil tool.

It is a basic shape in any 3D prog, however.

If that was not the word we`re looking for... nevermind.
<edit> Or, you could use Warjournal`s method, and draw straight lines between the vertices on a new layer.</edit>

Yeah, I used a rounded globe for a reference. It worked out pretty snazzy thanks again guys

Hmm, I'd usually do something like what you describe by creating a sphere in some (any) 3D application, and then taking a screen capture in wireframe mode. Add shading to taste!

Here we go... what I have so far ::: http://www27.brinkster.com/fallasee/asylum/ball.html
I think the larger version that I have on my hard drive looks a hell of a lot better.. but whatever... 1px lines don't down downsize overly graet. You live and you learn, right?

Yo Doc! Yeah, after bumbling around with PS for a while trying to get a really keen sphere, I thought I'd go the screen capture route. Well, it turns out the only decent (free) 3d program I know of has just gone offline. i.e. Blender.

Ah well... I look at this as a challenge

Hey, if all you need is screen captures, check out http://www.rhino3d.com/ - it's not the best for rendering (I'm told? Or was that the other way around?) but the evaluation copy will work for you, their copy protection will only let you save 25 times, but that shouldn't be an iussue here.
