is any one watching?

Anywhoo.... I stopped using the 3 pix brush and moved to the softer brushes between 13 and 27. To smooth it out a bit I used the oH so wonderful Alt key to jump to the color picker and then back to the brush... pick... smooth out... low opacity with mah wacom pen.

next for come color... because i am running out of time... so much more to be done though... ahhhhhhh

Very nice, its great the way your posting each step. Its like a tutorial on its own, cool. A little smothing would go a long way IMHO. And the stems are a wee bit to sharp-edged (sharp is the wrong word, its like they have an outline.)

I see some good things happening in here.. and I see somethings that I'm not real fond of...

First of all... I think I'll note that you have a "hard" edge remaining from the original outline that you sketched up....
It's still there... and just like an outline would..... it's keeping things flat.
Granted, all things have a solid stopping point...... 'cept for mebbe mist... or a cloud... but that's a different story altogether.
You've chosen to go with a light coloured variation for the outline... so it sticks out... and seems to flatten things, that's all i'm tryin' to say.

On your last b&w iteration... I really liked this edge...

Although you've used a wide range of colour varience... I have no feeling of depth, which is extremely needed in something like this.
And it's not like I haven't seen you create plenty of depth in things before...
So, under the assumption you're stuck.... =p ...
I just did a little painting on it....

Ha!... hard to even tell which is which...
Mine's on the left.
As you can see... not a whole lot of difference there...... but to spread that out over the entire pic, I think it'll give off a different, smoother feel.
You've got some absolutely wonderful colours in there.
As I zoomed in, it was very obvious that you've been going for some tasty variation.
So anyway.... oddly enough (as this usually isn't the issue with most people...) it seems you've just got it too choppy.
I think you're 100% headed in the right direction.
I think if you use say a 3px soft brush.... mebbe at about 40% opacity... and pick the colours in between and muster up some smooth trasitions, it'll flesh out spledidly.
I also went back over things with a 1 px brush.... at about 65% opacity..... using some strokes with the form of the petal just to make the eye see a little more form in it.

Like I said... not much all in all.
Great colours...
Nice brush work...
Needs some smoothing on transistions...
some fleshing.... (darker darks, imo)
And in an hour or two you'll be rockin'.

That's all I gots fer ya.
Nice job man.

Mm, very nice =)

There are a lot of great things going on in there, and I really only have one qualm - the original photos give s a *very* clear impression the the center of the flower is deep. The petals curve down into the center, forming almost a hole.

Your petals seem much more...flat, as if the beginning and end are almost on the same plane.

Would really like to see a clearer indication of the depth there =)

Yep..cast shadows will help once the light source is more defined (once you've finished your highlights and shadows)...that's the only crit..it's screaming for depth...but ooooh is it ever starting to look all soft and petal....ish

Im not sure straying from the photo is such a bad idea. The photo's depth comes mostly from the burred background and the stem behind it being a little blurred. I'd say if that wasnt the case the photo itself would look as flat. Maybe not, but I think your copy with a little more work on edges is pretty much bang on to be honest, its a great job you've done on it. Straying from the photo, you could zoom in and draw extra detail of your own, I know I would. I seem to Only be able to draw from my head/brain with any realsm accuracy, I have a hard time copying anything from sight. Which is quite strange.I dont get much practice drawing from my surroundings I suppose, because that mostly implies speakers, a mouse a keyboard and maybe a stapler. Not exactly exciting subject matter.

Im not sure if this is a complement or not, but .. If I stand a bit back from my monitor(about a meter) your painting looks much better than the photo !

Hugh - don't take my comments the wrong way - I love what izzay has done, and I agree that his treatment of texture and color is more appealing than the original.

But the depth I refer to is - as DG mentioned - caused by the cast shadows.
