Preserved Topic: Blur into Focus (Page 1 of 1)

Hey ya'll, ltns, I was wondering what the best way to achieve that blur into focus effect would be... like the main focal point is in the center of motion/blur lines going towards it looking like things are coming out of it. And how to make that jagged glass effect with a digital look... if that makes any sense. Thanx =) Cya

Um.....huh?

If you want to apply a blur only to certain parts of your image, just make a selection and apply one of the Blur filters.

For instance, say you want the middle of the selection to be clear, while the rest gets progressively more blurry -- try drawing a circle that fills about half your image, then Feather it so that it forms a soft blob over the center of focus. (Hitting Q will toggle back and forth between a more graphical representation of your selection.) Once you've got a selection that's centered on the area of focus, Invert your selection and apply a Blur filter.

If you want something a bit more specific, perhaps you could post an example? Or, better yet, make an attempt at the effect (no matter how bad your first try turns out) and put it up here for our advice. Remember, the more effort you put in, the more we'll try to help you!

as for the blur into focus, I'm going to work on a mockup of what i'm trying to accomplish right now and see if I can't show what it is i'm trying to achieve. Thanks for the tip on the feathering.

ok, warjournal is the master at that effect you were discussing - basically the technique is polar co-ords, motion blur, then polar coords back again...

i had a quick look at his tech slop and cant find it...

Actually, you can get a decent approximation with the radial blur zoom setting, and a selection with a very soft edge.

Personally, I don't like Zoom, but if Zoom will do ya, then use it. Maybe even use Quick Mask, History Brush, or a Layer Mask(!). You know, to not Zoom/blur parts that you don't want Zoomed/blurred.

Yeah, War's method will give you much more control then the radial blur method.

the logo/top image on http://mistsoftime.neopages.net/trial.jpg is what i have so far for the jagged glass/swirl background. I'm still working on the whole focus thing but as soon as i have a prototype image i'll put it on the web. Anyways, about the logo on that possible layout idea, how do i make more solid looking projections like on yoyo's site that i posted earlier?

I just wanted to add that some of the images you see like this will already have a greater sense of depth due to the photogaph itself. That is if the photographer had a camera capable of adjusting the focal point and she actualy knew a lil about photography.

I'm sure you've all seen those photographs that focus sharply on a certain point then blur the background more and more the furher away it gets. Anyways, this effect works wonders very well these kind of photo's.
