Yep, I just checked out istockphotos right now for the first time. Looks pretty good to me... I think I'm going to have to spend a bit more time browsing around there...

  • If you aren't interested in those photos... why?.. why do you "hate" them?
  • What exactly are the type of photos you are looking for?
  • Buncha mentioned paying for photos then.... maybe not a bad idea...
  • You don't need a premier camera to take photos yourself...

- just a couple thoughts and suggestions...

iStockphoto.com isnt bad, its also a pretty good website. This is a little off topic but about the same subject. Alright, if I took my lil camera into the city and took pictures of buildings am I leagally able to use them? or would you have to consult the owners of the building first? Also, what if I remotely took the same picture as someone else, maybe from a different angle or something, is the picture legally mine?

Jerm, search the net, theres plenty of free stock photos ... just hafta look.

Seems to me, Jestah, that the only thing you might have to watch is any sort of company logo that might be on the building, and even then, I truly doubt the business would care. Free publicity! Unless, of course, there's some type of defamation involved. Architecture... Ya can't really copyright part of a city, can you? I certainly can't shed any type of legal light on this, but that's my two coppers nonetheless.

I would say that you should be able to use any photo that you take in any manner that you want to. Whomever owns the negatives owns the photo.

True, but the National Enquirer is a valued peice of journalism, i would just be using them for websites. Anyway Im assuming anything taken with a camera is yours ... I suppose ...

The only kind of stock photos that I ever look for (and usually never find) are profile and mug shots for use in 3D modelling. Alas, they are nearly impossible to find.

Well, the "Freeest" of all stock photography (if you live in the U.S.) is pictures taken by the government. They are truly public domain, for whatever purpose you may desire.

Here are a few links:

http://gimp-savvy.com/cgi-bin/masterkeys.cgi
http://www.ars.usda.gov/is/graphics/photos/index.html
http://www.nara.gov/cgi-bin/starfinder/0?path=images.txt&id=demo&pass=&OK=OK

Also, here is an ok copyright free stock photography site:

http://www.freeimages.co.uk/

Ah - my favorite! BIOMED! http://www.brisbio.ac.uk/

I am of the opinion that photographers will be the last ones on the planet to embrace open copyright systems. The photography community is a stingy bunch and well, you do have to pay for photos most of the time. For web use, though, they only cost around $20 a pop.

<insane rant>

/me is continually amazed how artists think they can own art. Art is something that you might be priveleged enough to be paid to create in the first place, but after that you should let it spread it's wings and influence the world as it might. Real art is not a commercial commodity, but a spiritual one. Bah - we're all out to make money - why not make it creating art!? It's a cushy life, but if we can get away with it... it's nice to be able to sell something you spent a day on over and over effortlessly. Well, it's intellectual property - the ultimate oxymoron. The only intellectual property you got is what you keep to your damn self. Wait! Oh yeah, ALL YOU ARTISTS HAVE A REPUTATION TO PROTECT RIGHT?? DON'T WANT ANYONE STEALING YOUR ART! grumble. I hope my art is worthy of theft, and I fucking invite it. I'm pretty damn alone on this isssue (especially here), so keep that in mind.

No it isn't.

Well.. thanks! The main color effect of the sig is an image of a sunset. I used a lot of effects and techniques to get the 3D look, but the colors are all natural.

(edit : how I made the sig)

Hmm.. Well, Mr Blastafusix, it may not be officially free, but the collection of textures alone make it a worthy link. Thanks!
