Okaaaay. The graphics in the gallery are nice. Other than that, how do I put this nicely, well...the rest of the graphics are weak. Everything loads quick though .

Edit> I didn't find the blue glass chess pieces convincing. I think there would be more blue overall, not just on the edges of the piece. Perhaps the light source is too strong? I don't know much about the 3D apps.

Hmm. I was really pleased with the new banner image. Clearly 3D, but not overstated. It uses a technique I recently learned that simulates highly polished plastic, kind of like a billiard ball. Oh well.

As far as the chess pieces, all of the glass is pretty bad. The image is from '98, when I was still trying to figure out 3D.

Anyone have any suggestions for nav buttons? I've tried fancy glass things and such, but the things are too darn small to show any detail. I was aiming for simplicity here, but I think the half-circles are too much. Maybe just text, changing colors?

ive seen a lot of your work, and i think a lot of it is very impressive. looking at past work youve posted here and looking at your site is like.. "wtf? is this the same guy?"

just out of curiousity, why are you using frames *and* php?

I guess I just tried to shoehorn PHP into the way I had my old (also lame) site set up. How should I do it, just have the PHP spit out a new frameless page each time? I guess if the graphics were all cached, there isn't much advantage to the frames.

I kind of get Photoshop, and I think I have some flair with 3D, but I'm just having a devil of a time getting my head wrapped around this site design stuff. I made a whole layer library to support DHTML, but by the time I got the pages created, I just ended up using it to slide the navbar in from offscreen. Any suggestions/guidelines/encouragement would be appreciated.

Das,

your gallery shows you are obviously on top of the photoshop stuff. well done.

if i were you i would:

1-lose the Enter page

2-work on getting a look for the home page and to do so:
a. make a list of the 5 best sites you can find on the web and then analyze what elements you like in each.
b. really play with the different elements on a page of your own...
c. in playing try to analyze the sites in the big view (macro) rather than the micro.
d. go thru your favorite design magazines and pick out what you like about the pages that work.

hope that is of some assistance.

I think I need an entry page if I want to use PHP. My host requires the 'start' page to be named 'index.html' or 'index.htm'. I have to link to a file ending in .php3 to have access to php.

I could probably do an auto-refresh, but those can tick people off. I'll try it and see.

problem is, it is possible the Enter page is gonna piss people off....

whatever...

this is the hardest thing to give advice on, since its something i struggle with myself.

take a walk

read a book

look at magazines

look around your house/apartment/room

take a bath/shower (some of my best ideas come here)

listen to music

window shop at the mall

visit a historical area of town

look at something real close

do anything.

too many people are trying to be like everyone else (in the web design field anyways). find your style and go with it. make something that matches your art.

das:
for your index.htm, have:

quote:
<html>
<head>
<script>
window.location='phppage.php'
</script>
</head>
<body>
redirecting you <a href='phppage.php'>here</a>.
</body>
</html>

...or something similar (look up redirect in the javascript and dhtml page)...

so, das: you 'kind of get photoshop', hey?
that, no doubt, is an understatement.
ok, now, listen to me:
make your page in photoshop.
get me? make, a screen shot of what your site would look like if it were made.
then, we can look at slicing, and putting into html.
right? dont let your lack of dhtml experience affect your site designing.
in fact - sketch your page on paper even before you open photoshop.
feel free to email me the site picture, and i can tell you how i would turn it into a functional page.
if you need any more advice, tell me!

That's a very good tip. I think I'll use Illustrator instead of Photoshop, but same principle
Illustrator is much more 'web friendly' than it used to be, and very very revisable.

After a test, I found that my webhost does support a php homepage (even though their faq says expressly that it doesn't), so I don't need to forward after all (yay).

Expect an update soon ...
