Preserved Topic: Which interface to use?? (Page 1 of 1)

hi this is my first post and im only 14 so dont go ballistic with the "you suck"s and "die"s please . I made two interfaces but dont know which one to use. they are here:

theres not much of a difference except how the links will be presented. If ones ok and you have suggestions on how to make it better, please suggest! Oh and my artwork can be accessed, i just haven't linked from the main page. Here: Gallery All comments and suggestions on anything would be much appreciated.

sinnerstribulation (why are user names getting more difficult to spell??): Welcome. I don't think there is any need for any "you sucks" and "dies" as you haven't done anything to deserve it (I've also offered to stir fry and eat someone here already so I may be out of invective!!) other than for asking a silly question. The first design is so superior to the second that personally I don't see it as a contest. Also its not just a question of which is better I also like the first one in its own right (which is pos. a more important thing to find out) - there is plenty of room for some interesting mouseover effects as well (which is always nice).

On your gallery front (which I'm sure you know could do with a front end) I'd suggest you don't use strikethrough on the A:hover style.

Anyway it is a promising start - lets see where you can take it from here. We'll then be in a better position to critique things as they are added.

Yes, the first one is the winner by a long shot! But that doesn't mean there isn't anything wrong with it ...

I can't for the life of me read what your links say. I figured out Info, Link, and Email, but I just can't read the top three ... must be these 31-year-old eyes. The line cutting through them sure doesn't help. Looks like you are trying to duplicate the electric effect you got going in the top graphic, but it just don't work for me. The lines need to be much thinner.

The interface is nice, but my big question is how it will fit in with the whole page once you put some copy on there. The interface is kinda short both horizontally and vertically. Stick some place holder text and graphics in there and post again so that we can better see what you are after.

Keep working and make sure to get back with us as you continue to work. There is nothing worse than a first time poster who asks for a review then never comes back again ...

HEY! i'm not hiding behind being 14. i'm just sayin most of u guys probobly have a lot more experience than me. and its not like cg stuff is my thing... i use traditional media (media or mediums? i've heard both and cant figure out which ones right). anyway, thanx for the help. So i should take out the line going thru the words? the things say fanart, original, junks, info, email, links. I dont understand what u mean by text/graphic placeholder. could u elaborate or give some sort of example please?

Well, eventually you will have text in the main portion of the web page, right? Since there is none there right now, I assume you haven't come up with that particular part of the page ... the content. No big deal. However, to see what the page will look like upon completion, you can stick just any old text there -- a couple paragraphs of text -- used to "hold the place" of what will eventually go there. Once you do that, you can then see what changes might need to be made to your interface so as to make it fit better into your site overall, such as make it thinner or longer or whatever ...

Yeah, sinnerstribulation, I'm onboard with #1 as well. Seems to have better balance, probably because the colors are more consistent. Go with that, start generating some content, don't worry about what is said about how much you suck or anything like that. You have talent and it can develop here. Lots of really great artists around here...someplace. We'll all help if we can!

sinnerstribulation: I wouldn't be bothered about the age thing - here it is of little concern to anyone and is certainly no barrier to respect and responsibility (e.g. we have people of a broad range of ages moderating these forums). You've got the skills and we want to see what you can do with - hopefully if there are aspects you want to expand your knowledge in then there are people here who can help - just let us know.

sinnerstribulation: That looks OK with content although Darcusis is right to say that that hover cursor change isn't very good.

Things that you'll need to look at:

1. Making the text a bit clearer - there is a JUNKS and a LINKS button but they look pretty similar.

2. Giving the buttons a mouseover effect. If you can one rather cool effect would be to make that horizontal line (eletrical arc-like) move about a bit like you see on Van de Graaf generators (or people putting CDs in microwaves) as well as brigthen (more yellow) the text itself.

3. It might also be a good idea if you changed the round window above the links to show something relevant.

4. Adding content.

You now need to start working that graphic into a working interface and that might take a bit of work and tweaking. Anyway you've made a good start and got a strong look and colour scheme from that graphic so work with it and keep us updated on developments and we'll give you feedback on your progress.
