Well, it's not my very first model, more like third appart from some deformed balls and boolean boxes ...
But, I'm still very green to the whole 3D thing so go easy on me. And the model is FAR from finished. I used a subdivision-surface method (I think that's what this method is called, starting from a box then extruding & cutting and stuff) to model it to this point but havent joined the model togther yet, thus the obvious seam down the middle .
Any suggestions would be nice, Keep in mind that the model isn't by far finished, thus the face guard not being joined on and there being a complete lack of detail on the eyeballs. Some suggestion on how these could be overcome are still welcome though. I'm still have a bit of a delima (<-- sp??) on the best way to model an eyeball for a creature like this. Plus any other sugestions would be a great help as I'm pushing the boundries of my 3D knowledge so far...
The following image is about 90k, you've been warned!
Enough talk, this image is HERE
So what do you all think, I'm quite happy with my progress so far

I think it's amazing, Drac. Especially for your first model. As far as any suggestions, I don't have anything to say that you probably don't already know. As far as the eyeball, maybe a flattened sphere would work, but not too flat. Also, I'm thinking a vertical iris like a cat's eye would go great with your model.

Hey, thanks for the comments Silence, I like the cat's eye idea. I might actualy look into how reptiles eye's look as he/she is looking rather like a reptile.
Any suggestions for texturing this puppy??? I quite like the odd camo style colouring but wanted to make it look a bit more like scales. And the eyes creases/lids and neck area's will need different, smoother textures that more closely resemble real skin. But to do this correctly I'll possibly have to paint up some custom texture/specular/bump maps in PS. I remember breezing through a tute on how to do this really easily with a free MAX plug-in but I can't for the life of me find it again . As far as 'skinning' goes well, I really suck, so any help here would be greatly appreciated
I'm also thinking about making him/her a helmet at the moment, and adding in a mesh grill under the slits in the face mask. I'll also be trying to make some kind of ear in which i will then attemp to attach a funky little com usit type thing too. Man, I really with i did some comcept skectches for this before I started it. Arr well, I never planned on making it this complex, it was more of a learning thing, but I think i'll do concept sketches before i move onto the rest of his/hre body.
Again any suggestions would be great, and if you want to vote on weather I should make the model male/female/both? feel free to jump on in.

Well, the snake skin idea wouldn't be too hard. You'd just have to make a bump map in photoshop and then texture it with that. The hardest part would be to get the overlapping scales just right and getting it to tile perfectly.
Personally, though, the alien you've got has too many ridges and curves to have snake like skin. Snake skin needs to be shed every once in a while and having all those surfaces would make it a bit of a stretch. I think the skin you've got looks fine.
For the eyeballs, I think you're right to go for the reptile eye idea. I'm thinking maybe an iguana eye would be good. As far as the eyes in general, what would be cool would be to add an inner eyelid that's semi-transparent. I don't know how hard this is in max, but it doesn't seem too hard.
As far as twitch's problem, it could be a general thing. I recently had problems viewing anything hosted in Australia and I'm on a T1 myself, so go figure.
Other than that, hope to see more Drac.

Well...I would comment on it but my school's bloody ISP has decided to black access to any externally loaded image file, so I will be back.

Well, I think it's really come a long way, Drac. The use of lighting makes it more dramatic, and the armorment is starting to come along now.
For the faceplate, I think it's a bit too angular now. The edges are too sharply defined and it doesn't look right. I would soften that a bit, but not all the way to what you had before. Find a good balance.
Other than that, the head is really something now. keep 'em coming, and I can't wait to see more.

Arrg! Apparently my usual server has arrived in the UK and been set up but is having major hardware issues at the moment (Which would explain why twitch couldn't see my earlier pic :rolleyes . It's been up and down like a yo-yo for the past couple of days now, so if you can't see it just check back later...
