Hmm? Almost *too* easy, it begs for a more complicated answer! You need, of course, and HTML editor, which is usually nothing more than a text editor with cool little functions to add HTML tags quickly and easily. Most of the better ones will do color-coding of the tags so you can see what's going on easily. Here's a list of some of the better editors...

HTML Beauty: http://www.maxworld.co.yu/software/ by mr.maX! (free, too)
Homesite: http://www.macromedia.com/software/homesite/ (costs money)
BBEdit: http://www.barebones.com/products/bbedit.html for the Macintosh

I'm sure others have their own preferences, these kinds of threads always generate lots of comment, run a search here for "html editor" and look at the dozens of hits you get.

Hah! This is funny, I usually use Homesite myself, old habit, but when I check the website for it I thought I had followed the wrong link to the Dreamweaver MX site! Man, Macromedia knows nothing about subtlety, do they?

Doc, I had no idea what you were talking about ->

until I followed that link. Hmmm. . . That is very un-cool.

Or you could just open it up in something like Notepad - its not got any features that will help you edit the page but it is an option.

An HTML file, despite the ".htm" or ".html" extension, is really nothing more than a text file. It's a text file that's written in such a way that a browser is able to interpret it and make a visual representation of it.

Since it's just a text file, you can open it in *any* text editor, from notepad to wordpad to microsoft word (although i'm willing to bet microsoft word will do weird stuff with it). There are specialized "WYSIWYG" editors, such as FrontPage (which is evil) and Dreamweaver (which is less evil), which let you edit what the page will *look* like, but really all they're doing is changing a text file underneath.

Or did you mean "how do I put an html file on a website" or "how do i change someone else's html page", or something else?
