twitch has decided to put up a few 'tips' for anyone brave enough to submit their site for review.
all points raised were pretty damned appropriate.
my question - should this sort of advice exist somewhere other than a thread that will just disappear?
because i think that could be a good idea - just a few protocol tips.
this could be used in other forums, to some extent too - just something for newbies to read before posting.
eg

  • search the forum before asking "how do i do a mouseover"?
  • try and figure a bit out for yourself first - whilst happy to help, i dont think we should be product support. and learning is fun.
  • rtfm
  • if its warez, we dont want to hear it. end of story.

get my drift?
if we're happy with people learing the hard way, that's fine. i just thought a bit of advice early on could help.
questions? complaints? flames? comments? words of praise and adoration? irrelevant anecdotes?

Those items could be added to the Forum Policy on the "register" page...

Yeah, that would be a very good place to put a link to reviewing instructions, too...

Oohohhoho.. Melikes.

So, the challenge now is to develop documentation on specifics that are important to some of the regulations that we have come up with, to give all users a firm understanding with accessible knowledge of what is and what is not acceptable by our own standards.

So then we have headers on each forum (such as on here) with applicable links.

Doable, Doc?

If so, we can start compiling such things immediately.

Yah, I'm trying the announcement feature (see it here) and it's butt-ugly, better if we were to craft a series of pop-up windows that close when done with (maybe onBlur="self.close()"), I think this is one area where we want something more like help windows, it's a pain linking away from a long thread, people will avoid it. (Plus, it could be cute to actually do a series of well behaved popup windows, teach by example, heh.) We can discuss that aspect, just a thought of mine. The real trick is going to be the content and the presentation, "how do you request a review", could be considered as a mini-site for entry into your competition, hmm? I think if we write this aspect of it, we had better also do the companion piece, "how to review a site" since many folks can do this part badly also. The concepts we bring up here could be applied anywhere hopefully, and if we do it right I think we should offer to make it available to some of our competing boards, that'd be cute, heh. (Picture this help window at the DBM forum, fer instance.)

Hmm, I'm not really sure if the popup would be a good idea. Maybe something like that *integrated* ad on geocities would be better. Oh, and one more thing, there should be a way not to show this info again after reading it (cookies, for example)...

(Ich bin drin)(Comfy white jackets you guys got there...

anyway, what about a link only for neurotics?
They coul be placed in the header, in that geocities thing and so on..
AND they wouldn't bother you guys...
AND as a neurotics want to check stuff like this out they will at least click it. (Maybe not read... but who can guarantee that?)
