For any of you that have ever designed or printed a CD cover:

What dimensions do you use? I've been playing around but always end up trimming excess or coming up short.

I have MediaFace but the damned thing won't give up the digits!

I've printed a few before. Cover + spine and back. I'm pretty sure I measured in millimeters and everything came out fine for 300 dpi.

Gee DL, you're just so smart, I would have never thought of that.

Unfortunately I'm cooped up in a hotel and don't feel like going down to a hardware store to buy a tape measure or ruler.

And Illustrator doesn't convert from "hands" to inches.

Though it may still not be exactly what you're looking for, a cd's front cover has a height and width of 12.1 cm, and the back inlay is 15.1 x 11.8 cm.

I hope Illustrator will be able to tell you what's that in inches

kuckus

... a friend just told me that one inch is 2.54cm. For the front cover that's about 4.76 inches, and for the back thingee 5.95 x 4.65.

My balls are electric powered. I've got 20' extension cord, so I can't go too far.

insider - crystal balls may be magic, but a 'Crystal Ball® Peripheral' requires a dedicated power source and a USB connection.

I just found that in the manual now.

WJ - you should look into solar power for those balls

Actually, I've been looking into ambient power packs based on some of Tesla work.

Regarding CD cover / design layout:

I would definately check for avail. layout templates from your printing company.
The comany i went through is http://www.oasiscd.com and they require a specific template with crop marks, center marks (don't forget about edge bleed)
They provide templates for a bunch of layouts in different file formats, and although they switched the site around a bit, here is the link to illustrator (PC): http://www.oasiscd.com/music/FF_illustratorpc.html

good luck.

sorry DL, but it really sounds absurd to have solar cells put 'where the sun don't shine'.

however, the sun DOES shine out of my arse, so maybe i can harness that energy...
(no reference to wind power necessary.)

reitsma - the whole idea is that you then have to position yourslef in such a manner as to ensure the sun *DOES* shine there

i never knew that was what they called it these days.
well, you can just keep your "slef" to your "self".

Is there actually a set size of a pixel?

I always thought it was just a dot on the screen I didn't know there was a set size.

I mean I can set my display to 1024x768 or 800x600 and it's always going to be a 19" screen right?

Yep.

but when you specify your outpout size and dpi, the program will set the appropriate pixel size.

You can take an existing CD cover out of the jewel case and scan it @ res for an accurate template
