conundrums 1
conundrums 2

riddle s1 (submitted by skaarj):

quote:
A and B were mortal enemies

A went out fishing one day in the middle of the local lake, in the middle of the local forest, in his little dinghy.

That same day, B got really, really drunk, picked up his rifle, two rifle bullets and went out to the same forest, to the shores of the same lake. B hated A with a passion, he wanted to kill him as he wanted nothing else in the world. He walked out to the shore, took careful aim, and shot the gun straight up in the air.

A lay dead in his boat, and was discovered by the police two days later. The coroner's report showed that A had died from a bullet wound to the head, and the bullet was matched to B's rifle, B was never tried for murdering A.

How did A die, and why was B never tried for the crime?

good luck people!

Orbital motion?

The bullet progressed in a straight ray directly up until it de-celerated to standstill. It would then progress straight down again, but given the passage of time, the earth's rotation would have the bullet land farther to the west of the original shot point.

B wouldn't be tried, because the bullet would hit A from directly above him (a bit impossible without a plane to aim from), but would also pick up enough gravitational force by the time it hit to probably pass right through his skull, musculo-skeletal structure, and the friggin' rubber boat.

heh.

Though I prefer the idea that he shot a 300 pound duck and before impact, the duck spit the lead at A, and then crushed him.

Oooooooo, I think I've got it!!!

B shot one straight up, while it was in the air he shot the other right into A's head, then the first bullet comes back down killing B, and ain't nobody gonna convict a dead man!

--statement--
dg: your theory sounds good, but would be a bit simpler if you took into account the wind factor.

--interpretation 1--
your complex theory need not have any rotational elements, as wind could've done the same job.

--interpretation 2--
are you sure the duck 'spat' the bullet?

*giggle*

Random fact: If you shoot a bullet (or throw an object) into the air, when it comes back down to the height you threw it from, given air resistance and such are negligible, the bullet/object will be going at exactly the same speed as when it was shot/thrown.

It seems every year someone gets hit by a bullet fired into the air at New Year's. A wife of a friend of mine was hit in her hip by a bullet coming right through her roof as she slept.

Slime's right, but I'm sort of cheating by assuming that the answer will be in the "wrong" vein.

gravitational pull is centrifugal so a ray is always measured from the focal center. Basically the bullet gets fire while the gun, and the shooter are already in "motion" (since we're standing on the earth that's moving, we and whatever else around us is moving at the same rate relative to our measured surrounding.) Since atmosphere travels within the same cosm as the rotation of the planet, and gravity is the only "acting" force on the bullet, it should travel in a relative ray.

But then the questions would suck.....hehe.

WHOOPSIE...

Well Slime's right twice (err once, and I babbled...but whatever)...gravity as the only acting force to slow it down, will be the only acting force to accelerate it again toward the ground...so yep, same speed as when it left.

Same force? Well I'd say no, since we have to take into consideration the cold of upper atmospheres and the presence of vapour in the air above a lake. That thing'd be a big old iceball by the time it came down....force, mass, acceleration....booom...

heheh

DG, that's why I said "given air resistance and such are negligible", heh =)

(hmm... apparently the "escape" key is the same as the "Clear Fields" button... that's such a helpful feature. It's right up there next to the idea of a "don't actually post this reply when i tell you to" checkbox, that would be good to have too.)

InSiDeR, I haven't forgotten yours either... it's just that I completely suck at logic puzzles. My dad loves them but I guess that didn't rub off on me. I can't wait to hear the correct explanation.

I am also wondering who's right about Skaarj's.

My guess is that it is DG. I was just going to pop a variant of the duck answer in:

B shoots up hits a duck who lands on A propelling the bullet into his head killing him.

jest fer the record...

He um... was a psycho. He shot his gun straight up in da air so the bulllet went way up and then fell down on the guys head and killed him.... yet the guy never aimed his gun directly at the dude in the dingy.

ummm... eye? you are in a forest with your mortal enemy - you shoot a bullet straigh up, it kills him.
you tell the cops "nooooo... i wasn't aiming at him, even though he is my mortal enemy - i just shot up. go on, ask him."
can you see a problem here?

yah... um... some one said it already, i forgot to add it... mine was quite cryptic... yah, he had 2 bullests wit him and so he shot himself 2. Yah... Bugz is the man.

oh yah... i forgot this also... See, the bullet came down from Above the dude in the raft right? So the police would think that it was a freak accident, and that Dude A never ment to shoot dude B, the guy in the rubber tub.

Nevermind... *shakes head* people... Sheesh!

Alright here is the question again

Five suspects were rounded up in connection with a robbery. Their statements were as follows:

Alex: "Chris and Dave are lying."
Brad: "Alex and Eric are lying."
Chris: "Brad and Dave are lying."
Dave: "Chris and Eric are lying."
Eric: "Alex and Brad are lying."

Who is the only suspect we know with certainty to be lying?

Good Luck.

Look at the first thing it sais, Alex: "Chris and Dave are lying.". Now look at daves statement, Dave: "Chris and Eric are lying.". Notice alex said dave and dave said alex, now look at chris, he didn't metion alex although alex mentioned him. Understand? It's like the police ask chris who is lying, and he sais brad and dave. And then the police say what about alex? And chris is saying no alex isn't lying. Of course none of that happened but when he didn't return alex's statement that means that he said alex wasn't lying and alex said he was lying and so if alex isnt lying chris is the liar its confusing isn't it. Now just becuase the answere is chris that doesn't mean that no one else is lying, because it asked who do we know "certain" that is lying, so there could be more then 1 liar but with the given info, we can narrow it down to chris.

weeeeeew
~takes a towel and whipes forhead~

alright
~gives the floor back to buncha~

lets get ready for some debating on the answere since I know some of you won't agree

What the hell?

"Notice alex said dave and dave said alex"

"Dave: "Chris and Eric are lying.""

Dave didn't say Alex! Which makes your entire explanation bunk, my friend! Bunk!

Now, admit that it was really Brad! Why are you covering up for Brad? What is he holding over you, and why are you willing to sell out Chris for it? If Alex isn't lying, then Eric isn't lying either, and Eric's pointing a finger at Alex!

I'm going to go curl up in the fetal position for a while, and when I get back, you'd better have a better explanation than that!

**wonders what izzy is doing with a gun**

NOW.... as was said before, i reckon it is ALEX.

okay, here is how i deduce it:

1) write A,B,C,D,E in a circle - in that order.
2) draw the accusation arrows: A -> C, C -> D, D -> C, C -> B, B -> A, A -> D, D -> E, E -> B, B -> E, E -> A. (i think i got em all!)
3) deduce:
notice the symmetry in this picture - whatever can be said of B, can be said of E. Same applies to C and D. as such, A is the odd one out, and can be the only single definite answer. If, persay, it was B, then by the same evaluations, we could deduce that it is E.

That's what i reckon anyway.

Right this is getting out of hand. If eyezaer is watching InSiDeR and Wangenstein goes and gets Brad then bunchapixels will have to fetch Alex. I'll go and get 3 pillow cases, some strong tape, 3 sturdy chairs and a car battery with some crocodile clip leads. We'll get one of them to confess. I think poor Chris can be left out of the 'informal questioning'.
