Nope. It doesn't surprise me at all.

What I find most interesting is not the original article itself, but rather, the posts that follow in that thread. While the replies overwhelming take a dissenting viewpoint, the word "hate" is used frequently in reference to the original article's author. That's what shows how much hate there truly is out there.

It's on both sides. Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.

Judging the piece as its author requests, I give it a D- with points off because it lacks focus, which explains why supporting arguments are weak, rambling and poorly structured. Citations made are not verifiable, which calls their usage into question. The conclusion is also weak.

Sentence structure is poor. Comma splices abound. Paragraphs seem to break based on eyeballing it rather than proper structure.

What keeps the piece out of F territory is that the goal seems to be to incite rather than to persuade. It achieves that goal.

Raptor, why are you surprised?

brucew, are you suggesting that we can't hate the original article by quoting that passage?

Bugs - I guess it's because I attend Univ. of Michigan, lol. It's a really diverse campus and people are pretty much accepting of everybody. It tends to blind you to the rest of the world in a way.

That, or I've seen it before, and chose not to believe it, to keep me from thinking that people are no longer compassionate *shrugs*

Raptor, be thankful that you live in an environment like that but don't be fooled, hate has *always* been with us and there is currently no shortage of it. But perhaps a better focus would be to ask what is the alternative to hate?

I read it all the way through, waiting (and expecting) it to turn into sarcasm. HMm, strange. The simple fact is, that if you cause the death of someone through your own actions, you're guilty of murder. Think of how we might have reacted had it been some other type of person most people feel it's OK to hate, say a child molester, or a serial killer? The fact is, it's just not legal for people to kill other people! (Note: It's still legal to be an idiot. ;-)

Way to go Bugs! Yes, the article is entirely on the side of...homophobia. And, big surprise, it takes a while to 'remove' the old hates and misconceptions of the past. The great news is that the men involved got prison sentences, and for life (now that's progress, if you ask me). Now people with homophobia will think twice before doing the same thing again. And that is progress (especially in Wyoming). As for the person who wrote the article, he's got a big mouth, but I don't think he's about to do anything about the situation, other than whine and moan about the 'injustice' of it all. A dying breed, if you ask me...with no place in the future.

Bugimus - No, not suggesting that at all. I just found it interesting that so many people on what's IMHO the correct side of the issue, used the word hate and inciteful language similar to the original piece. Sort of, "I hate you because you endorse hate crime." Uh, wha'?

It doesn't take much to pull down the veil of civility.

I agree with brucew. There was one post that was going on about how people have the right to express themselves, and then later in the very same message say how much they hate people like that. I find the irony very commonplace, so to speak. Just meaning that people are writing their feelings without any real conviction, or dedication. The article on it's own was poorly written as someone earlier suggested, but at least he was consistent. What's worse being ignorant or lacking the conviction to stand by your opinion?

Overall though it does not really surprise me that people are so hateful. It really depresses me that people can react in such a strange way when their emotions, or belifs, are threatened. It's almost as if as a species we haven't learned anything in the last 200 years. Hmmmpf. Too bad I don't belive in reincarnation, if I did maybe I could come back as a dog or something.

damn.

I can't turn around without bumping into a thread about this sort of thing...even if it's in my own backyard, surrounded by the birds and the trees.

Humans are adept at several things, chief of which is hating that which is different. While some might quibble over the authenticity of this particular "article," it does become a moot point when you realize this author is, and I am certain I could find statistics to back me up on this one, in the majority. If that doesn't drive something home for you, it's time to wake up.

We surround ourselves with hate, whether it's hate of something we don't understand (people that speak a different language), of someone that has something we want (killing while mugging) or of something that is just plain different (homosexuality). We cannot claim to be an evolved race until we can learn to live with these people that command themselves to hate.

That's right, we can't change them. Lashing out at them in displays of ignorance will further their cause.

I say again, those that hate are the majority. We must acclimate our lives to theirs. It's a sad fact, but that's how it has always been. The Catholic Church has been rife with hatrad since it's inception. Such as it is, humanity (Western civilization to begin with, and the rest of humanity later on) has to become accustomed to it's overbearing dislike of that which was not Of The Church (OTC).

Humanity perservered then, and it will again now.

Woah! Good to hear from you again, twItch^. Funny, but even though we are much different from each other, I often find myself agreeing with what you post...I feel you put the whole thing in a very easily understandable form...I agree with what you've said...so much hate, so very little understanding.
