looking at the vegans thread - this months topic: Food. all kinds of.

vegan, non-vegan, fast-food, slow-food, foreign food, ancient food, pills, whatever, ...
everything that has to do with food in the broadest sense.

rules as usual: no recyclers allowed. unlimited sigs per person.

Yup, BK's new logo.

Yep, that's BK. I had considered doing the old logo, but this one looks nicer (the old one just looks like crap now). I don't know where I got the idea for this one, but it just popped into my head and I couldn't get out. Yes, this is how I purge my demons. I make lame sigs.

Heh. I've got to admit, that's one funny sig you've got there, Mas4k. A tad tall, maybe, but nice work.

I agree with Suho, it's a nice sig. However, based on the resizing of the actual image, you should be able to get that WELL under 40k.

Yeah but it's a png they're huge! I once posted one on my webserver and everytime you'd try to download it, it would bottle neck and the page wouldn't load!

Well in that case, it's pretty damn silly for it to be a .png, don't you think?

The concept behind chosing a file format is that you choose the most appropriate format for the application.

In this case, you have a very simple (as in not a very complicated color setup/depth) image to be used as a signature file, with no transparency and a semi-requirement to be a small file size.

So make it a damn .gif and be done with it.

Jpeg probably wouldn't be bad either, and might be even smaller 'cause of the non-solid colors near the bottom.

being sick in the head... I played with this a bit.

A gif at 128 colors is only 10.81k it dont look all that yummy though.
256 color looks really good and is 13.6k
not bad
jpg 50% quality 9.853k with some nastyz around the text but still good enough to eat.
jpg at 60% is 13.4k

eh... yeah, i was thinkin jpg would be better but gif handles the text and the colors here very very well.

now, a png-8 setting at 256 colors is 14.51k and really dont look any diff than the Gif on 256 colors.

wowho! the png-24 setting gives us a friggin huge file, and on my monitor, it looks no different.

Much better, Mask. The jpeg lost a little quality, which could be expected, and you might have been able to use less compression and get more quality for a larger filesize, but what you have now is fine.

Hm, but, if those are all the colors that are needed, then increasing the color depth won't do much.

The piece simply doesn't use a great variety of color.

Grumble - my only point really is that there simply isn't a great deal of color variety in the image...so saving it with a higher depth isn't going to do much. As can be seen by his comparison. =)
