Hi everyone! Hope you all had a pleasant New Years.

I have never run a contest before so be patient

This month's theme is Jewelry.

I believe the rules basically boil down to no recycled sigs and keep the file sizes reasonable. If there's anything else let me know...

Uhm, yes. Nothing to add here. Well, there are some guidelines about sigs in general...

DB summarized it shortly; "As always, file size, dimentions, creativity, and quality of workmanship will be under consideration."

And.. please leave your original signatures at the door, and only use signatures for this month's competition in these threads.

Wolfen>> A dog collar will be fine as long as it has some flashy bits

I've intentionally left this kind of open because I don't want to limit anyone too much. I am looking for stuff that fits within the general guidelines of a sig, is put together well, and is creative. The most important thing is for everyone to have fun. I like what docilebob did at the end of his contest with creating a thread with just the entries so I may give that a try around 01-27-03.

EzRa-D, unless our host decides differently, there is no limit to the amount of sigs one can enter. Must say you've done a pretty good job on the ring, there. Some things you could try are changing the highlights of the gem to color dodge or another blending mode.
Flagman, yours is really high for a sig. For your next try you might want to work more vertically.
Oh, and everyone, please, no one-line posts like 'good sig, man!'. Helpful comments are good, but please keep it cconstructive.

Flag: i think the chain links are too circular should be more rectangular if your trying to get that gold chain look and the whole thing is just too big for a sig i think.

Synax: actually the bottom of the ring seems like it should be straighter or something...

very cool suho - the text does look a little wrong... the only advice i have is that although the text shoudl be distorted along the x axis (the imaginary straight line underlining the text should now be "u" shapes), the y axis should suffer very little distortion (if it were arial, then the letter "I" should still be pretty much straight up and down).

hope that helps.

edit: also, i seriously suggest a layer blending mode for the red text on the ring. some sort of overlay, or something could be really effective, i think.

edit 2: non competition sig destroyed.

Not a problem.

Take a look at your layers palette. You'll see a few things. Among them, the word normal in a drop-down menu. Shift through them, overlay is in there somewhere. Those are the layer blending modes. Many other tools (airbrush & pencil come to mind) also have different blending modes that, in practice, are similar to (read: exacly the same as) the layer blending modes.

Some of them aren't exactly straight-forward in what they do, others are. There's a tutorial on thinkdan that caters specifically to blending modes.

Hope that helps.

suho - i'm glad you got my point - layer blending doesn't always achieve the desired result, but the red text does now look like part of the ring. ...and i'll just employ some paralipsis by not mentioning that i think that the 'master suho' should be engraved a tad shallower than it is, because that would be getting picky.

Just have to say one thing Suho: gold isn't yellow!

=(

As it stands now it is awfully bright and washed out, and looks distinctly....yellow. Which also means disticntly non-metallic.

The text in the latest version is much better (I also prefer the version without your name), but the color on that is also too saturated and primary.

Not sure if that helps at all...but hopefull it at least makes sense.... =)

Raptor: Alas, I suck at mixing colors (in fact, it's a wonder I can produce anything halfway decent with PS). However, I am pretty good at Google, and I've been looking at a lot of pictures of gold. I think I've got a decent color going, but we'll just have to wait and see.

Incidentally, I figured out what was bugging me with the lettering (and I think this is what reitsma was talking about): it needs to be vertically skewed. So I'm working on that. I'm also working on making the Tengwar script look like its actually glowing--after slapping it on top of the newer, more realistic gold gradient, I realized that it actually looks like crap.

So, anyway, I've got a bit of work ahead of me. I will post the results when I get to them, and I'll probably delete the previous rings and slap them all on a page somewhere that I can link to--don't want to be hogging up the thread here.

One entry to rule them all,
One entry to find them,
One entry to bring them all and in the darkness bind them...

Yannah, Tuesday's too late! The competition is over in about 24 hours so you better hurry.

DL-44, good observation. Funny how the times have changed.

Okay, everyone else! You've got 26 hours to enter your last minute works or fix your previously entered sigs. Good luck and happy creating!

Good Lord - I've had one of those weeks were I've been very confused but that is just silly - "more speed less haste". You may right years of intensive aural abuse has clearly done me now good

I'm off to have a lie down.

Carry on everyone (before I have another bright idea and shut this down again ). Right I'm not going to shut anything down for a week...........

At the same time, I'll bet most people reading this have received a piercing more recently than the last time they wore a tux, with or without the cuff links included.

Of course, I could simply be underestimating the distance between their last prom/wedding/performance at Carnegie Hall and now.

Chudzta, I modeled it after those tongue rings that have a little plastic window on the front, which usually sport some kind of message or picture (like a peace sign or whatever). That basically gave me an excuse to have my name on it, hence, making it a sig. The glow is to indicate that it is plastic, and not some ambiguous dark spot on the metal.
